Labor Day.

Happy Labor Day.

Right now I'm in the car with the entire Acuff crew driving back from the North Point Community Church Singles Labor Day Retreat trying to convince my three old not to drop whatever it is she is looking at to amuse herself into that no man's land between the car door and the baby seat that you can never reach while you're driving. And you can try, you can attempt to hook you arm back there and even think "thin arm thoughts" but it won't work. You can't reach the toy, you can only brush it with the tips of your fingers and then you try to convince your kid that it was actually a pretty boring toy any way, in fact this one right here is far superior, let's play with that until we get to a rest stop at which you will try to take your sandals off inside the gas station bathroom and walk bare foot on the floor.

See you tomorrow.

Jon

  1. I'm at work, why? Because when I asked my boss why we have to work on Labor day he answered my question with a question, "What better day to Labor?"

  2. My older kids get really tired of that game, since they are the designate "reachers" for all things that fall to any space behind the front seats in my van.

We haven't made a significant road trip this summer b/c of their very hostile feelings toward the dropsy game.

Prayers for your safe arrival home.

  5. Don't really know what Labor Day is but I'm sure Google will tell me. In Britain we'd spell it 'Labour' hehe. Since I missed Shameless Saturday, I'll take this opportunity to tell My Story: Severe M.E. and me: http://tinyurl.com/d3o9td

  7. Stroopwaffle - I read the link to your story - and my heart goes out to you. So at least you know that you've reached one UK psychologist and got the message across! Praying for you...

  9. 1. I have to re-apply my daughters sandals every time we get out of the car.

    2. Dried milk art on the pleather, unlike art or a fine wine, actually depreciates with time.

  10. 2 years ago, driving back from Destin I hear, "Mommy?" "Yes?" Then the delightful sound of heaving and the telltale splash.

Lost toys? It could be so much worse. And smelly.

  11. Another thing that Christians seem to like: hating on organized labor.

Also, have you ever written anything on the illustration that pastors do by giving away lunch money to anyone who would come up and take it? That thing is rife with material.

  12. Another thing Christians like, cool tshirts promoting the word! http://www.cafepress.com/jesusteesplus

  13. I was thinking the same thing as Stacy from Louisville. Carsick children tend to unload in the worst possible places!

And what about the infant who loses the sanity-saving pacifier? First, you have the problem of the carseat that faces backward! Then, you know it is absolutely impossible to reach the fallen pacifier. Even if you do manage to find/reach it, you cannot possibly drive while attempting to return the pacifier to the baby's mouth - you might poke an eye out!

  14. Thank you Sally! That means a lot. Feel free to copy+paste it into Microsoft Word and print it out to give to colleagues. Trying my best to raise awareness.

  16. classic multitasking huh? i can't believe your wife lets you type and drive at the same time, while you vainly reach behind your seat for that toy. that's classic family road trip stuff there.
