Who are you listening to? A Short Saturday question.

How fantastical are the podcast sermons from Matt Chandler, pastor of the Village Church in Highland Village, Texas?

A few weeks ago my little brother and I road tripped to Tallahassee (which I will forever refer to as “Sassy Tallahassee” having been informed of that rhyme by a delightful bumper sticker) and on the way there and back we listened to Matt Chandler sermons.

I’d like to pretend that kind of thing has happened before. That when my brothers and I go on road trips the three essentials are: Diet Rockstar energy drink, little Debbie cakes riding shotgun, and sermons on the stereo. But that would be a lie. I don’t think we’ve ever listened to a sermon on a road trip before.

That’s how fantastical Matt Chandler is.

But who you listening to? There are a million great pastors out there. Whether it’s your hometown pastor, online or on a podcast or in any other digital round the world wide interwebs kind of way, who do you recommend?

Who are you listening to these days?

  1. I'm listening to http://thegodjourney.com/podcast.html A podcast by Wayne Jacobsen (one of the guys behind publishing The Shack) and Brad Cummings. Life-turning-around, mind-blowing, revelation-full podcasts. Just two guys chatting about life.

  3. Sorry, but I've just remembered something even better: Transition Series It's a free downloadable audio series by Wayne Jacobsen about breaking free of the bondage of religion and embracing the affectionate and life-changing relationship with the Father. Changing from religious thinking to relational living. It changed my life and is teaching me who God really is, stripping away the rubbish we're taught by religion. Listen to it!!!!

  6. Bryan -
No kidding. I've had a CD of the booty God booty message I did at Dave Ramsey last year that I've been trying to get up online forever but I'm dumb. I think I might try to post the audio for it this week. Maybe we should do a podcast or something when you're down in Atlanta for Catalyst this October.

  11. I really enjoy listening to Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill Church in Seatle. I love that his messages can sometimes go for 1.5 hours which is.great for long trips and he's very thorough. The other reason is that I just love his way of presenting. How many pastors use the phrase, "punch you in the neck" or even, "save me some time and punch yourself in the neck.". Seriously he's like a jerk for Christ.

  12. The podcast I love listening to is our pastor from our local church here. His name is Chilly Chilton & if you listen to him, you won't be disappointed. Here's the link to his blog: http://www.ichilly.com - to hear the podcasts, click on the headphones at the top of the screen.

  14. Who am I listening to? At the minute, mainly Counting Crows, although i *did* just get the new Doves record too....

    ReplyDelete
  15. I listen to Mark Driscoll and Stephen Davey. Davey is more old-school, but is the president of my seminary so I figure I'd better keep tabs on what he has to say.

  16. I have several favorites, but I have to give a shout out to Tim Keller's Prodigal God series. (available free on his redeemer website) It is fantastical!

  17. Paul Washer, John MacArthur, John Piper, James McDonald, Alistair Begg... Preachers of the Word and defenders of the Truth. (rare these days when so many are preaching... um, sorry, TEACHING the feel-good gospel).

  19. Jon, I just recently got on a Chandler kick and I have been loving the dude! His easter message was punch-you-in-the-face awesome. I've listened to it 4 times!

I'm going to see him, along with Mr. Driscoll, Dr. Piper, and some other dudes at Advance09 next week!

One name that hasn't made it up here yet is Francis Chan from Cornerestone Simi Valley in California.

I first heard him at a Passion conference in your neck of the woods. The dude is awesome! One feisty little asian!

  24. Matt Chandler has become a staple of my week. So good and refreshing look at the Bible. I agree the Easter message was awesome.

I have recently started listening some to Mark Discoll after he was on FamilyLife. He is defitely in your face. I was hesitate to listen to him because I watched a video clip Mars Hill put out on The Shack calling it herasy when you could tell Mark didn't read any of the book for himself. Chan is very good to listen to. Then of course my pastor Mike McDaniel of Grace Point Church of NWA (shameless plug)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Alistair Begg-Truth for Life podcast

Amazing messages, and they are less than half an hour. It is possibly heathenish of me to focus on that feature, but I prefer pastors who can present the word of God in less than 2 hours.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian in NYC. ( http://sermons.redeemer.com/store/)He gives clear, well-reasoned, thought provoking sermons. I bought his series on Proverbs, I have found I can apply what he preaches on to my real life situations. His book "Prodigal God" on the prodigal son story shares the overwhelming love of God to both sons.

    I am a big fan.

  29. wow, this is a fantastic idea. I've seen some pastors that people are listening to that I will now go check out and begin listening to as I drive around our little town in the middle of Colorado.

Being from Seattle I find a connection that goes past theology with Mark Driscoll (he pulls for my favorite sports teams and mentions many of the places that I grew up around)

I've also found myself listening to Andy Stanley and taking mental notes on how he communicates so clearly.

And you can't beat Ravi Zacharias for some really deep thinking.

Maybe if I lived in a big city and had a long commute or had to fight traffic I would have more time to listen to different pastors. Oh well, small town life is awesome

  30. Steven Furtick of Elevation Church in Charlotte. Awesome speaker. Saw him as a teen at Winter Conferences, and found him online again a while back. Freaking awesome stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Two of my favorites are Craig Groeschel and Perry Noble. I also enjoy listening to Francis Chan.

    ReplyDelete
  32. *John Piper (my fave)
    *Ravi Zacharias
    *Joyce Meyer
*Focus on Family (not a sermon but great podcast nonetheless)

And in the future, a few more from the recommendations above! Thanks, everybody.

  33. Colleen, check out Beth Moore at oneplace.com.

    ReplyDelete
  34. My own "pastor" (our denomination doesn't call them that). Also Scott Hodge from the Orchard who I "discovered" last year at MinistryCOM. (Which is also when I discovered SCL)

Does Beth Moore count. I'm trying out her "Esther" bible study by listening to the audio and she speaks with authority.

    ReplyDelete
  40. David Platt at Brook Hills Church in Birmingham, Ala. He's the best I've ever heard, hands down. Anytime I'm in the car for 45+ minutes, I put on one of his sermons. He unpacks God's Word in an amazing way. He's truly anointed.
I also like listening to Alistair Begg.

    ReplyDelete
  41. There is an AMAZING speaker called Ben Stewart from Breakaway Ministries in Texas.
    http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=129084376

I also listen to sermons given at Gordon and Wheaton via iTunes U.

  42. I'm a megafan of Greg Boyd at Woodland Hills Church, Minneapolis, MN. He's controversial which makes me think, and he's been umpteen years working his way through the book of Luke, which is as indepth as you can get.

We also like Bruxy Cavey at The Meeting House just west of Toronto, Canada. Meeting House is the fastest growing church movement in Canada with eight locations. Bruxy's teaching is a mix of practical relevance and church history. He's also the author of The End of Religion (NavPress) but they're redoing their website so I can't add a specific sermon link here.

  43. I have always been a big fan of Rob Bell, and I love listening to him preach. However, lately, I've discovered this guy named Greg Lee from Suncrest Christian Church in Indiana. He reminds me of the pastor from my home church... nothing flashy, but explains life and the gospel in a clear, easy, down-to-earth kind of way.

  44. Matt Chandler and John Piper.

  52. I've been listening to different seminaries' Chapel podcasts. You can find them on iTunesU. APU and Dallas Theological have great lectures and chapels available.

Also, Matt Brown at Sandals Church in Riverside is awesome. Actually, I think he's the only great thing about Riverside.

And I also like the NPR: All Songs Considered podcast. Just throwin' that out there.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I have been listening to John Mark Comer from The Way (a ministry out of Solid Rock Fellowship) in Beaverton (Portland), OR! It is some amazing stuff and he is one of my favorite guys to listen to. Here's the link:

Also Judah Smith from The City Church! http://thecity.org/

    Enjoy!

  54. I get to listen to Craig Groeschel weekly because he's my pastor and boss but my fave from elsewhere is Francis Chan. I listened to him and talked about him so much my friends almost staged an intervention. Even Craig said teased me about him when he announced he was coming to speak at our church. (Don't miss www.OnePrayer.com!)

But the last thing I heard him say stopped me dead in my tracks and I haven't listened to a podcast since. He said we already know far more than we have actually applied. I need to quit fattening up and live everything out I already know to do.

  55. oh my goodness! i can't stop listening to matt chandler! best sermons on sex e-v-e-r.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I went to The Village Church with my Dallas friends, while I lived there for two months. The guy is stellar, and very tall.

I'm listening to the old standby John Piper right now, since we are going through Romans in my small group and they spent years on the book in their church. It's a cross between an audio commentary and sermon.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Perry Noble's One Prayer message from last year has been in my car for well...a year now! It's awesome!

Also, I listen to Art Evans from San Diego Christian Worship Center, whose sermons I listened to for years before he became my current pastor. His "Jesus Christ, Prince of Life" series blew my socks off.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Definitely Paul Washer @ Heart Cry Missionary...blows my mind every time.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Love me some Matt Chandler and Mark Driscoll but I would trade a years worth of their podcasts for just 1 of Andy Stanley's.

Andy is hands down the best communicator I have heard. Simple and applicable.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ian Lawton the Pastor of Christ Community Church (AKA "C3") in Spring lake michigan has really amazing sermons (and a dreamy austrailian accent...) They're available as podcast too :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Colleen, I agree, I can't believe that there have been like, a gazillion men recommended and like what? 1 woman.
Maybe more male ministers have podcasts? I dunno though. I can think of a couple of amazing female ministers and preists I know. I doubt any of them have podcast though.
Maybe Barbara Rossing (Forgive me if miss spelled her name).
She is a bible scholar and Lutheran minister who's written a great book ("The Rapture Exposed")
I wonder if she has anything recorded?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Gotta agree with Jon, I love listening to The Village.

I find John Piper to be fairly mind stretching as well.

Also listen to Louie Giglio and Rob Bell's teaching podcasts. Partly for the teaching, partly because I want to learn how to be a better preacher myself.

One of my favourite podcasts is wordlive, which is a daily scripture passage and meditation.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I second Ben Stuart. The Restoration of Peter and Love Sends 1,2 & 3 podcasts are some of my favorites.

Anyone else feel like it's really easy to focus too much on speakers/podcasts and not enough on taking the time to delve into the word yourself?

    ReplyDelete
  64. I podcast all of the usual ones, Piper, Johnny Mac, Washer, Sproul, also Wretched radio with Todd Friel. The one that has slapped me in head recently is Voddie Baucham. He just released a few more of his sermons and wow. If you have a chance SermonAudio.com him and listen to The Supremacy of Christ in a Postmodern World.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm a John Piper person too. I just want to hear people that talk about Jesus. I just want to hear about him.

Sermon Index has a pretty vast selection of old and new people. I love Keith Green's sermons. So much more to that man than music :)

    ReplyDelete
  66. What a great entry in your blog! I am excited about having some new sermons to listen to!

My favorite by far: Andy StanleyNorthpoint.org/messages

He has an amazing ability to clearly communicate God's truth. Very practical, thought provoking, convicting teaching.

Someone mentioned a sermon series on sex. I think Andy's sermon called "A Category of One" is one that should be listened to by all unmarried teenagers/young adults.

Another person mentioned not listening a lot due to not having a long commute. I don't have a commute :) but I listen while I cook, work around the house, iron, work outside, etc.

Thanks again for this great blog!

  67. Judah Smith
    www.thecity.org

Younger preacher who has changed my life listening to his messages over the years.

    ReplyDelete
  68. As I've mentioned before, I love Wretched Radio with Todd Friel. I also started listening to Dr. Wayne Grudem's "Christian Essentials" which is basically his entire systematic theology course in mp3 format for free along with downloadable study guides.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Nate Edwardson of The Stirring, in Redding, California. We don't go there anymore, but I listen to the podcasts all the time. He's a third generation pastor, and I think each generation has improved. We now attend Neighborhood Church in Redding, and if I miss a Sunday, I'm sure to download the podcast to hear Bill Giovannetti.

  71. Man, I'd love to listen to podcasts but never get to. Might be that I don't have a player, might be that I never travel, might be that when I *do* travel I take the entire Ohio State Marching Band with me. Well, not the official band, of course, just three of its members impersonating the band. Otherwise known as "my kids."

But when I *do* have some time to listen, I like NPR and TED talks. Not exactly churchianity, but interesting nonetheless.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'm addicted to Bill Giovannetti at Neighborhood Church, Redding CA. A great teacher and speaker. The current series is "Can You Feel It?", the Bible's wisdom about human emotion, but the site has several series, including "How to Recession-Proof Your Inner World.

Very deep, and theological, AND interesting, funny, and moving. Our small group in Chicago uses his sermons for our Bible Studies.

  100. Yay! I saw one other person recommended my pastor as well. Robert Morris from Gateway Church in Southlake (Dallas/FortWorth area), TX. I have never heard such poignant messages in my life. You can also check out our services, live on Sundays at 12:30 pm (CST) at gatewaypeople.tv . :)

  103. I've jumped on the Mark Driscoll bandwagon (Mars Hill Church Seattle, WA) and have listened to the "Trial 8" series. I really enjoyed the two sermons on marriage (one for the men and one for the women)

  104. I LOVE MATT CHANDLER! My husband and I listened to him on our roadtrip from Houston to OK and back! He gives it to you straight and he is hilarious to boot! Listen to his series on Ecclesiastes and let it blow your mind!

  106. Ken Boa mp3 teachings are really great. http://www.kenboa.org/audio_and_video/mp3teaching

The Sermon on the Mount is particularly very powerful for me... "You will give your life in exchange for something. You have no choice. You will give your soul to something. Your heart to something. What will that be? You have to ask what it is that I'm going to be pursuing? Do not pursue things that God says is worthless..."

    Try downloading them!

  107. I listen to Mark Driscoll, and Dan Rude from the Downtown Church in Des Moines, Iowa

Also, probably a lack of female speakers because men are to be the teachers. I do know you can find some women speaking at Mars Hill in their small group sessions.

  108. I'm down with Rob Bell at Mars Hill Church in MI. The Mousetalgia podcast is also pretty rocking . . . Disney does count as worship right?

  109. monergism.com has a huge mp3 library with tons of great sermons. and to just add to what many have said, you can't go wrong with john piper or mark driscoll.

  110. I know I'm late, but we listen to:

He only does little 10 min sermons on youtube ( brojustin ) but they are awesome.

  111. wow! Talk about a plethora of comments! :)

I listen to Gateway Church's podcast (Dallas, TX) on my iPod riding my bike to work, and try to keep up with Newspring's video podcast.

Will definitely add more to my iPod soon, though, being inspired by this list... ;)

Also, I noticed this is all English language podcasts. Obvious, as this is an English-speaking blog, but I'd like to add a link to my Berlin, Germany, church's podcast (which I edit) for anyone here who may be looking for German-language sermons. You can reach me with comments: podcast 'at' icf-berlin.de

  113. I attend and serve Gateway Church (Southlake, TX) so I listen to Robert Morris every chance I get.

In addition to my own pastor, I listen to the trifecta of pastors: John Piper, Mark Driscoll and Matt Chandler.

Since I live in DFW, I get to occasionally visit The Village and hear Matt live.

  114. Matt Chandler is brilliant. I've been able to truck up to Dallas and hear him and the series that he did back in March ("Repentance") was wonderful. Before he even began the sermon, he addressed his church and I was planning on tuning him out since it had nothing to do with me. I'm so glad I didn't. He speaks about legalism vs. license...and it's UNREAL. Check it out, for sure...it's dated 3/8/09.

  115. "because men are to be the teachers"

SERIOUSLY? and people wonder why I'm not a christian.

  116. Rob Bell at Mars Hill in MI is my regular driving companion, but I also listen to Sandy Adams from Calvary Chapel Stone Mountain, and get the Calvary Chapel Bible College Friday Lecture series-Chuck Smith is amazing, as are the rest that speak

  117. OK, stupid question from the tech laggers among us: Can an iPod be connected to an old-style home or car stereo via an adapter cable, or do I have to buy a docking station or something?

Oh, and my pastor, Dave Bowman of New Horizon Church in Durham, N.C.: http://www.newhorizonchurch.tv/page/messages/

  118. I love John Piper, Tim Keller, and some occasional Driscoll & stuff from the Village. But you guys have GOT to check out Bryan Loritts! He pastors a church in Memphis and is one of the most solid, engaging Bible teachers I've ever heard. You can check out some of the recent sermons here.

I also like listening to stuff from Coram Deo in Omaha.

But seriously...you need to check out Bryan Loritts! (His dad Crawford Loritts is great too; you can download a great message of his here.

  119. Kat--please don't use "men are to be the teachers" as an excuse not to investigate Jesus! Some Christians believe that, some don't. I'm in the second group and regularly lead a small Bible study with both men and women members.

  129. Greetings of Peace in the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ,

It is really privileged for me to write to your ministry and I pray may
Lord bless you abundantly. I found that you have awesome and precious
work of Lord Jesus Christ, May God bless your Church staff and all
    precious work.

I have studied your web site, and I found it the most wonderful site to
get right to the True Word of God. I found that all your material is
full of knowledge concerning development of religious faith.

I am Kirn, from Multan , Pakistan . Living in Pakistan we
Christians have to face many obstacles to get the access to the Word of
God. Most of the people in Pakistan are not capable to understand the
English language and they are hungry of the Gods words. So I will be
very thankful to you if you can to translate your material into my
    native languages.

For this I am able to translate the good stuff of you into my native
language Punjabi, Sariki, Sindhi and national language Urdu. There are two
purposes to request you the first one is to know the Word of God more
deeply and second one is to be supportive my family. My suggestion for
you is to create your material in my language of Urdu, Sariki, Sindhi and
Punjabi also. It will bring lots of blessings of the Word of God for the
Pakistani and Indian Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi and Sariki speaking people.

For that purpose I as a translator will bring your material into Urdu,
Punjabi, Sindhi and Sariki language as well. Although it will take your low
expenses, as well as fund for the Word of God, to reach out to the
deserving people. As a translator I will take the expenses that will be
    spending just for the Word.

May God Shower his blessings upon you and your ministrys work.

Looking forward for your kind response,

    Yours Sister in Christ,

    Kirn
