#287. Father Abraham had many sons - the VBS Mix Tape

I hate advertising.

On some levels I love it because it's what I do for a living and it's what enables me to buy Clifford the Big Red dog products for my daughters. But on other levels I hate it, and the commercial for the Kidz Bop CD reminded me of that.

Kidz Bop is a CD with popular top 40 songs sung by 10-year olds. I’m cool with the idea of kids singing, my 3-year old daughter loves to sing in the car, but the songs they put on these albums are clearly not written for little kids. Take these lyrics from Hinder’s “Lips of an Angel” a song on Kidz Bop volume 11. It’s a heartwarming, childhood favorite about getting a phone call from an ex-lover while your current lover is in the other room:

Well, my girl’s in the next room. Sometimes I wish she was you. I guess we never really moved on. It’s really good to hear your voice saying my name. It sounds so sweet. Coming from the lips of an angel. Hearing those words it makes me weak. And I never wanna say goodbye. But girl you make it hard to be faithful, with the lips of an angel.

What 10-year old can’t relate to that song? What 10-year old hasn’t cheated on his girlfriend a time or two? You know how it is. You’re on the slide on the playground, your lady is playing hopscotch and an old flame winks at you from the swing set. What’s a kid to do? Thankfully Hinder and Kidz Bop have prepared you for this moment and upon taking a long, hard pull from a cold chocolate milk, you can stare off into the distance and wistfully say in a voice that hasn’t gone through puberty yet, “Girl you make it hard to be faithful with the lips of an angel.” (There's some debate about whether Kidz Bop modifies the lyrics on their version, but regardless of how you tweak it, at the core it's still a song about sex.)

I wish I could punch Kidz Bop in the face. But I can't because it's just a CD and that would look weird to see me in a parking lot just punching a CD over and over. What I can do though is make an amazing VBS mix tape for my daughters. That way when we sitting on 22s and rolling through the drive thru at Chick-fil-A the cops won't catch us riding dirty and we can bring the new flava in ya ear like Craig Mack. (Whoa, that sentence was raptastic!)

Here are the three key song categories you need to keep in mind when it comes to a great VBS mix tape:

1. War themed songs
I've written about this before, but what can I say, we love teaching our four-year olds some military-flavored songs. My favorite two are probably "God's Army" and "Onward Christian Soldier." I like God's Army because it gets specific and actually mentions things like the infantry. I dig Onward Christian Soldier despite it kind of sounding like something that might have been sung during the Crusades.

2. Size and dimension songs
We absolutely love measurement songs. From "Deep and Wide" to "My God is so big" we can't get enough of songs that speak to the size of things. Think I'm wrong? How about the song that says, "Zaccheus was a wee little man." It's probably one of my three favorite children songs that focus on someone's lack of height.

3. Happy happy joy smile songs
A lot of Christian children songs are like sunshine deep fried in cotton candy served on a plate made of sugar and rainbows. That is, they are happy. From "Joy, joy down in my heart" to "this little light of mine" we bring the happy when we sing. Even things like the flood that killed most of mankind gets the smile treatment. How can you be depressed about the cleansing of the planet when you sing, "God told Noah there's going to be a floody, floody." I think Donald Miller talked about that in Blue Like Jazz. And on a side note, adding a "y" to the end of any word makes it a little happier. Flood becomes floody, which is makes it kind of feel silly. Maybe next time I get fired, I'll say I got "firedy."

Those are the three key categories, but I promise I have left out one or two. What about "He's got the whole world in His hands" or "the B.I.B.L.E., yes that's the book for me?" I hope you'll share your favorite song but remember, the greatest VeggieTales song ever is "the Cheeseburger Song." That's not opinion, that's fact.

What song would you add to the mix?

99 comments:

  1. There is no God's Army, it's the Lord's Army and, the Lord told Noah there's gonna be a floody floody, get those children out of the muddy muddy...

My nephew's name is Christian. His theme song, I am a C, I am a C-H, I am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N taught him to spell his name by the time he was three and may well be the reason his parents chose that name.

  2. You can never go wrong with songs about fish.

    I'm just saying.

    <-SB><

    ReplyDelete
  3. "If I were a butterfly" or "All God's critters have a place in the choir"
    How about an animal subcategory?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Don't forget food analogies.

'Life without Jesus is like a donut cause there's a hole in the middle of your heart...' - The Donut Man

  5. Cheeseburger song, get out! Where's the love for the Hairbrush song?

    As always, cleaver!

    ReplyDelete
  6. the song about the great commission is awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Speaking of fish, did Noah have to bring them on the ark?

  8. Left to fend for himself musically one Sunday morning in Wee Worship, my husband flipped through the song book for any songs that used only the precious few chords he knew. After a rousing chorus of "Rock My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham," a five year old raised his hand and politely asked,
    "What's a Bosom?" Good times.

  9. My friend Zack is convinced the Cheeseburger song is about sex. I'm just saying.

  10. My fav category three song as a kid is as follows:

    It's bubblin'
    It's bubblin'
    It's bubblin' in my soul
    It's singing and laughing
    Since Jesus made me whole!
    Folks don't understand it
But I can't keep it quiet!
    It's bubblin'
    bubblin'
    bubblin'
    bubblin'
    bubblin' in my soul!

Not the most complicated thing, but the fun part is that you start singing it faster and faster and faster, pretty much until you pass out. When I was a kid, this was the best thing ever.

  11. i remember signing a song when i was little that had awesome actions. it went like this:

"i may never march in the infantry,
    ride in the calvary,
    shoot the artillery,
i may never zoom over the enemy,
but i'm in the Lord's army, yes sir!"

  12. Jesus loves Me this I know.
Classic. The heart of the Gospel summed up so succinctly. :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would put in there "The 10 commandment Boogie." I love that one.

Oh and I think the Cheeseburger song is a million times better than the Hairbrush song.

Also--the song Jesus loves the little Children, all the CHildren of the world.

  14. We have some KidzBop CDs, too. I think the songs on ours are pretty innocuous, but I've heard some odd ones at their afterschool program. I'm waiting for KidzBop to find a way to put Li'l Wayne's Lollipop on one of their CDs.

  15. You must include:
"Read your Bible and pray everyday, and you'll grow, grow grow!

Neglect your Bible and forget to pray, and you'll shrink, shrink, shrink"

Oh how the kids love to grow and shrink. Works every time.

  16. Another vote for the CheeseBurger Song for the Veggie Tales Hall of Fame. I pretty much love anything with Mr. Lunt.

On a Veggie Tales note, have you seen the new Saturday TV Show? Sacrilege. They totally purged the theme song of tuba.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sing with me, Stacy.....

"Jesus is a friend of mine"....

    ReplyDelete
  18. I've been noticing some re-runs on SCL lately. What, no mid-season replacements like "So You Think You Can Pray?" or "Are You More Theologically Sound Than a 5th Grader?"

    ReplyDelete
  19. My Uncle Pat wrote a song for our kids church. It was fantastical. It went something like this.

    Jesus went about doing good
Doing good! Doing good! (shout this line at the top of your lungs)
And healing all who were possessed by the devil
By the devil! By the devil!
    For God was with him
    With Him! With Him!
    Acts 10:38
(At this point he had us all break out out air guitar and solo it)

This song was fun because not only did you get to yell, the kids got to impersonate their favorite Christian rock stars. DC Talk. Or in my case, Stryper.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Then there's the childrens' songs with KJV wording. My favorite is sill, "The wise man built his house upon the rock..." I never really knew what "stood fast" meant...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Actually Noah didn't bring fish on the ARK....he brought them on the arky, arky.

    ReplyDelete
  22. There was literally a VBS song called The Map Rap one year... If there are spinners on 22s involved, then The Map Rap is a must...

*singing* The map rap... talkin' 'bout the Word of God... the map rap...

    ReplyDelete
  23. I went to a legalistic Christian school as a child and one of the first songs we learned went like this:

    O-b-e-d-i-e-n-c-e
    Obedience is
    the very best way
    to show that you believe!

Teacher: Do you believe in God Sarah?
    Me: Yes.
Teacher: Then why are you not obeying me by doing your work? Would Jesus be happy with you right now?

Don't put that one on the CD!

    ReplyDelete
  24. So happy - the Cheeseburger song just can't be beat and I loathe KidzBop too - thanks for the smiles while I think about my favorite songs from when I was little!

    ReplyDelete
  25. While I agree that The Cheeseburger Song is a timeless classic, I gotta show some love for Endangered Love (Barbara Manatee). Just sayin'.

Also, I always loved 'Praise Ye the Lord (Alleluia)'.

    ReplyDelete
  26. In category 3, a church in Chapel Hill (one that you know very well) taught the following song during VBS...

Love love love love love la love love
Love love love love love la love love
Love love love love love la love love
Love love love la love... HUAH!

The kids loved it. It belongs in your mix.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Uh, hello people--what about I LOVE MY LIPS!?!?! Everyone know that not only is it the BEST Veggietales song, it's also the most challenging to sing!

Also, what about songs that make you SHOUT during them? Those were always my favorite...

"I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart
    WHERE?
    Down in my heart!
    WHERE?
    Down in my heart!
I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy..."

    "Hallelu, hallelu, hallelu, hallelujah
    PRAISE YE THE LORD!..."

"If you're happy and you know it shout 'Amen'
    AMEN!..."

    ReplyDelete
  28. The genius of the Cheeseburger Song is that it's a Meat Loaf parody... performed by VEGETABLES!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Father Abraham was fun, even though I was always dizzy and tired by the end of it.

Oh, and if we're going to be throwing out love for Veggie Tales, I vote for "The Water Buffalo Song".

    ReplyDelete
  30. Have you heard of the GO FISH Guys??? My boys love their music (a four yr old and 2 two year olds)and know every song by heart on several of their cd's.

They put some spunk in many of the classics!

So when you see that silver mini van rockin and rolling down the road - that's me and my boys jammin out to "The Bible Book Bop".

    ReplyDelete
  31. I was a counselor at a Christian summer camp during college, and the songs we sang were nothing short of awesome. My all-time favorite was "Let My Light Shine Bright," which is a sort of call-and-response song, and must, especially in rural Florida, be led by someone with a heavy southern accent:

    Chorus:
    Let my light shine bright
Through the night, through the day
    All the way for you
    YEEHAW! (echo)

    Verse:
    People try! (echo)
    Try to be free! (echo)
    But they're not! (echo)
    Why cain't they see! (echo)
    That you died! (echo)
    To set me free! (echo)
    Fer all! (echo)
    Eternity! (echo)
    Two three unh! (repeat chorus)

My first summer, we had a kid from the panhandle lead this song and he was a master. One of my former co-counselors is visiting me this week and although it's been five years, she could still remember all the words.

    ReplyDelete
  32. oh dear, five years of camp songs to choose from.. i'd have to go with father abraham because it's really really fun to watch from the stage. or written in the word!

written in the word in the good, good word is a message from our God gonna tell you all about it how to get to the kingdom (wooohooo) the good life.

    and i-i-i love Jesus
    nananananananananananana
    and i-i-i love Jesus
    nananananananananananana

repeat, increase speed, you know the drill.

also the song "My best friend" by Hillsong. my camp made up the most incredible actions to the chorus, it's a classic.

ps veggie tales for the win. mr lunt creeped me out as a child, but i do appreciate it now. i get the cheeseburger song in my head frighteningly frequently.

  33. "A lot of Christian children songs are like sunshine deep fried in cotton candy served on a plate made of sugar and rainbows."

Best line of the post. You rock the house Mr Acuff.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Spelling songs, definitely. How about "I am a C-H, I am a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N..."
Talk about early literacy skills- these kids can't read, but they can spell Christian, Bible, and other good, Christian words.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I just read Sarah Harris' comment ... legalistic teachers can really mess a kid up --- our 7 year old son told us that his teacher informed him that "If you don't close your eyes when you pray - then you don't really love and need Jesus." Thanks teacher. Thanks for that. It took a lot of deprogramming to convince him she was full of legalistic crap.

  36. Oh, you can't get to heaven...
Oh, you can't get to heaven...
    In a mini-skirt...
    In a mini-skirt...
Oh, you can't get to heaven in a mini-skiiiirt.
Oh, you can't get to heaven in a mini-skirt,
Cause God don't like them little flirts...
    You can't get to heaven...you can't get to heaven... in a mini-skirt!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Pastor Bob, that was my FAVORITE song in Super Church.

No you can't get to heaven
In Pastor (insert your pastor's name)'s car
No you can't get to heaven
    In Pastor _____'s car
No you can't get to heaven in Pastor ___'s car
Cause Pastor _____'s car don't go that far!
All my sins are washed away
    I've been redeemed!!

    Or my second favorite:

    I'm inright, outright, upright, downright
    Happy all the time
    I'm inright, outright, upright, downright
    Happy all the time
    Since Jesus Christ came in,
And cleansed my life from sin, IIIIII'm
    Inright, outright, upright, downright,
    Happy all the time!!!

And it gets faster every time until you can barely sing and do the motions!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm sad my youngest has outgrown Veggie Tales. I still secretly listen to them when I'm alone in my car. "Cheeseburger" is good, yes. But it's no "I Love My Lips" or "Dance of the Cucumber", I'm just sayin.

My favorite VBS song is B-I-B-L-E (yes that's the book for me!).

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hallelu Hallelu Hallelu Hallelujah (PRAISE YE THE LORD!) (oh...sorry got carried away a bit there)

    I also vote for "I am a C"

Anything with hand motions - especially ones that can be adapted

Fishers of Men (which is interesting once you have a girl who knows how to fish who refuses to do the motions without actually pretending to flip the bail on her pretend fishing rod)

    I am a Promise

    Input Output

But all time highest vote has to go for Father Abraham or I'm in the Lord's Army...

(Now don't even get me started on Veggie Tales - but I don't think those belong on a VBS tape - they get their own... And don't even force me to choose between any of them - if they're on any silly singalong video - they're my favorite and likely to pop out of my mouth at any time, despite not having kids, and having been in highschool when they came out...)

    ReplyDelete
  40. The Hairbrush Song! WHOOOOOOOO! Pirates Who Don't Do Anything also rocks and is way, way, way better than the lame Cheeseburger Song. ;)

Kidz Bop has 'Lips of an Angel'? O_o? ...the heck? Kind of like Radio Disney playing 'Oops, I Did it Again' (with 'I'm not that innocent' taken out, of course. So the song is kid-friendly. *rolls eyes*).

@Lauri: All God's Creatures rocks! I remember singing that in choir when I was in third grade and loving it. The next time I heard it, I was away at college. Some music missionaries were visiting the church I attended and hearing (and singing along with) that song totally made my week.

@Anonymous 4:35am: LOL! So what did you tell him?

    ReplyDelete
  41. "The wise man built his house upon the rock/
The wise man built his house upon the rock/
The wise man built his house upon the rock/
And the rains came tumbling down!"

This one had the best hand motions, except maybe for the awesome choreography demanded by "The Lord's Army."

    ReplyDelete
  42. Or you could just "wanna be a sheep, baa baa baa." There are hand movements too, but I'll spare you
    ;-).

    -J

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is disturbed by "Kidz Bop." Party like a rock star? Really? Fergalicious? What are you thinking!

On a Veggie Tales note, what about "The Bunny!?" Oh, I love the bunny! I guess that may not be a silly song. But it's great!

I was a weird kid. My favorite song was "Father, I adore you" because Ms. Elsie taught us sign language to it. I fell in love with signing then.

    ReplyDelete
  44. We used to sing "Hallelu, hallelu, hallelu, hallelujah, PRAISE YE THE LORD!" split into two groups, and you stood to sing your part and sat while the other group did theirs. In the middle, where there are two PRAISE YE THE LORDs in a row, there would invariable be people in both groups standing or sitting at the wrong time. We thought that was so hilarious.

Plus we would sing it successively faster each time and fall exhausted on the floor at the end.

    Good times, good times.

And I have to throw in a vote for The Yodeling Veterinarian of the Alps: "No skeptic could explain just how, nor could one oft rebut, the wondrous deeds that went on in that little Alpine hut..."

    ReplyDelete
  45. Cheeseburger song - hands down (but they don't have any hands!) voting closed, time to thank the Academy.

Great re-post, Jon. Hope you're enjoying the frenetic last days of summer.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Also there is:
"Peter and John when to pray
They met a lame man on the way
    He asked for alms
    and held out his palms
and this is what Peter did say:
Silver and gold have I none
But such as I have give I thee,
In the name of Jesus Christ
of Nazereth rise up and walk!

He went walking and leaping and praising God (repeat)"

Beside the weird phrasing and having to explain what "lame" means in this context, this is another classic because it lets the kids jump around a bunch. Sining is all about movement to accompany the lyrics!

    ReplyDelete
  47. God's Army. Epic win.
VBS was centered around that song for us a while back. Very Razzle Dazzle :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Stomp on the Devil

    "God's given us mighty weapons
    to live in victory
    to stomp on the devil
    and walk mightily
so put on your holy armor
and don't be afraid no more
no no more you've been chosen by the mighty one
    YES!
And now it's time for the war!
(Here's where you do the politically uncorrect 'indian whoop' by slapping your hand against your mouth and screaming)

    ReplyDelete
  49. On a Sunday afternoon
    out in God's back yard
    Jesus was the quarterback
    and Moses was the guard.
    The angels in the grandstand
    gave out a mighty yell
    as Jesus scored a touchdown
    against those guys from Hell.

    Go with God!
    Stay with God!
    Rock 'em Jesus
    Sock 'em Jesus
    Go, go with God!
    Go with God!
    Stay with God!
    Rah rah sis boom bah
    Yaaaayyy God!!!

(And I am not making this up.)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Don't forget Veggie Tales, "I Don't Got No Bellybutton."

    Classic

    ReplyDelete
  51. "Every Move I Make" is pure gold for VBS. Hand motions are a must though.

Anyone for "The Pirates That Dont do Anything" by Veggie Tales?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ah, I know most of these

But one has been sadly neglected.
    (motions indicated by *)

If I had a little white box
    to put my Jesus in
I'd take him out and kiss kiss kiss (*kiss hand)
and share Him with a friend
(other versions say put Him back again)

And if I had a little black box to put the devil in
I'd take him out and SMASH HIS FACE (*pound hand with fist)
    And put him back again

Nothing like the double hitter of
    a)keeping Jesus in a box
    b)violence toward the devil

    It's perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I have to agree with Abby G, "I love my lips" is the best Veggie Tales song. (Any song with "Ufda" in it gets a few points extra.)

I'm not sure if Kidz Bop is to blame, but I have to admit that I was a little weirded out when my 5 yr old nephew started singing "Dontcha wish your girlfriend was purple like me?" I have no idea where that version came from but its better than the original.

    ReplyDelete
  54. First things first: Maybe next time I get fired, I'll say I got "firedy." Heh. I think I'll avoid that in talking to my occupationally challenged friends right now, but dang, that's funny.

I'm so sad. After five years of teaching preschool, even more of teaching Sunday School, and several of teaching VBS, I'm drawing a blank on some of my very favorites. I sort of remember a hippo song... and another about Jonah... fiddlesticks, I've been working with the bigger kids too long. :<( I'd buy that tape, btw....

    ReplyDelete
  55. Sarah Stone, thanks for posting those lyrics. I never, ever knew the line was "But such as I have give I thee." I always sang "But such as I give to thee," even though it never made any sense.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks for ratting out Kids Bop. I've seen those commercials and I feel the same way. It's ridiculous. We have two daughters also, 7 and 4. What they wouldn't give for one of those cds. But they have had to deal with childhood disappointment in this area. I've mentioned it to my husband before, but thanks for saying it in a much more hilarious way than I ever could.

    ReplyDelete
  57. My kids love the Lyle Lovett version of "I'm a Soldier (in the Army of the Lord)", though he doesn't go through the whole armour of God in his version.

What about the transporation songs?: "Hop on the Bus", "Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore, "Every Step I Take", "Wind Beneath My Wings" (oh, wait, the last one is a treacly pop song, not a kids worship song)

    ReplyDelete
  58. There is the spelling category. The B.I.B.L.E, as you mention. I am a C, I am a CH, I am a C.H.R.I.S.T.I.A.N. And that one's particularly fun because you try to sing it faster and faster each time.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I heard a cover of Lips of an Angel on a christian radio station the other day and I almost punched the radio in the face nine times.

Just because it has the word angel in it does not make it ok.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hes my rock my sword my shield Hes the wheel in the middle of the wheel the lily of the valley my bright and morning star! i dont care what you say im gonna get on my knees and pray.

    ReplyDelete
  61. ok one more.. has no one heard of:

    OOOO Pharoah Pharoah
OHH baby let me people go

    HUH

    yeah yeah yeah

    ReplyDelete
  62. Oh yes, I've heard Pharoah, Pharoah. Sung to the tune of Louie, Louie.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thankyou, Jon, for getting "The Lord, told Noah, to build Him an arky arky!" stuck in my head for eternity.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Come on! Where's the love for the Veggie tales Belly Button song and the Boys n the Sink?! That has to be the best! "oh, I need to tell you something. I don't got no belly button!"

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oh, I love Pharaoh Pharaoh! Especially the part where "all of Pharaoh's army did the dead man's float!"

What about "Ain't no rock (AIN'T NO ROCK) gonna cry in my place, as long as I'm alive I'll glorify His Holy Name!"

Or "BeEeElieve in the Lord Jesus Christ!" (You buzz like a bee)

    Man this is fun!

    ReplyDelete
  66. You are crazy. The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything is *clearly* the Best Veggies Tales Song Ever, although I'll grant you that the Cheeseburger Song is pretty sweet.

And I'm not sure what you mean about Kidz Bop - does the sight of a three-year-old princess in pigtails belting out "I feel like a woman" with perfect inflection as she sings along with the ten-year-old songleaders not warm your heart? No? Well then...

    ReplyDelete
  67. Nonono, the best Veggie Tales song by far is the Dance of the Cucumber:

Listen to the tomato. Isn't it sad? He wishes he could sing like the Cucumber... but he can't. He can't even...whistle.

The favorite kids church song at my church by a land slide was about the fruits of the spirit and involved a giant cut out of a banana. The last line of the song was "and that's why I'm BANANAS for my Lord," and every week a kid would get picked to wear the banana, stand at the front of the room and scream BANANAS at the top of his lungs. Then the leaders would say OK kids, now let's make them hear us in the sanctuary! And we'd sing it again and all screamed BANANAS. It was very fun.

We also had a song complete with hand-motions about the Israelites entering the promised land:

10 men went to spy on Caanan
10 were bad (flash 10 fingers and a thumbs down)
and 2 were good (flash 2 fingers and a thumbs up)

What did they see when they spied on Caanan?
10 were bad and 2 were good (repeat hand motion)

Some saw giants big and tall (hands over head)
Some saw grapes and rafters fall (hands make tumbling motion down)
Some saw God rule over all
(hands in circling motion over head)

10 were bad and 2 were good!

Repeat faster and faster and faster until the kids can't do the motions or spit out the words, and they are tired out enough to sit still and listen to the lesson :)

  68. Ok, as far as Veggie Tales goes, no one has mentioned The Gated Community song - that is my all time fave.

I agree - Pharaoh Pharaoh is a classic from like the early 90s, but what about "All God's Creatures Got a Place in the Choir"

AND what about "Who did, who did, who did, who did, who did swallow Jo-Jo-Jonah? Whale did, whale did, whale did, whale did, swalllow Jo-jo-jona, whale did swallow Jooonah, whale did swallow Jonah UP."

I love to rant on VBS songs. It's endless and it's timeless and what's more, I love teaching my two girls the same stuff!!

  69. Thank you for a wonderful post, Jon. My husband probably wants to have me committed as he sat here and listeded to me sing every song listed as I was reading along...I think he would hide when the Mix Tape came out!

I agree with the Cheeseburger Song - always has been my favorite Veggie Tale song, bought Madame Blueberry just for it!

Pastor Bob, I think you probably got my favorite in "Oh You Can't Get to Heaven..." We would sing that all the time on the way to the pool at church camp. It was always funny to see who could come up with new lines.

Rhodeisland Alissa - Pharaoh Pharaoh is definitely up there.

  70. Father Abraham is the best, you can make those kids do jumping jacks while gargling pudding if you wanted to and it would still be good clean Sunday School fun.

The songs I always hated while growing up came around Easter. [siiiiiiigh] It's easy to change any and every song with the word "Hosanna" in it to a song about "Savannah." Fifteen little palm branch waving minions of Weird Al himself would all sing, "Shout Savannah!" I'm not even making this up.

  71. Pharoah Pharoah rocks my world. So does this, sung to the tune of We Will Rock You complete with stomping and clapping in time:

    Jesus was a cool dude
    Forty days without food
Taught the golden rule and that's OK
Got a smile on his face
    By God's grace
Spreadin' his love all over the place
singin' He Will He Will Love You...
He Will He Will Love You...

    [air guitar at will]

    good times.

  72. Oh my dude, I totally forgot about how my church sang I'll Fly Away. Okay, it's not a camp or Sunday School song. It's actually a great song, but the church I was in growing up just took it a step too far.

They flapped their arms. Yes. Hundreds of grown adults flapped their arms in the air like some overgrown Kiwi bird and sang, "I'll fly away oh glory, I'll fly away..."

    Or there's always:
    "Pharaoh, Pharaoh
Ooooh baby, let my people go,
    HUA
    Yeah yeah yeah yeah...."

  73. I like the one where half of the congregation sings "Praise ye the Lord" then the other half stands up and sings "Hallelujah".

When we were younger my little brother thought we were all saying "Crazy the Lord"

  74. This is my all-time favorite post. I laughed so hard the first time I read it that I cried and sound stopped coming out of my mouth. The Hinder part is just genius.

    ReplyDelete
  75. The "I've got the wonderful love of my blessed Redeemer way down in the depths of my heart" verse was always the best! They might still be my favorite lyrics...

Also, did anyone else's youth group take "I Am a C, I am a C-H" and add "-ong" after the consonants, thus becoming "I am a Cong, I am a Cong-Hong", etc? It made it about 187% harder, but SO MUCH more fun!

  76. i'm gonna have to disagree with the cheeseburger song claim. yeah, i know, i said it. personally, i feel that "keep walking" sung by the french peas in Josh and the Big Wall is way better. because:

    a) they have outrageous accents
    b) its like a child's version of the french taunting in monty python's holy grail

    and

    c) singing french peas can take a mexican potato any day.

also, i sympathize with the dislike of kidz bop. as a preschool teacher, i just don't understand how kids know as much as they do. i know 3 year olds who know more BT&H rhymes than i do.

  77. Love this post! Sometimes at work we sing these oldies to relieve stress.

And what's the allure of KidsBop?? I hate it. My 10 month old literally FREEZES when the commercial comes on. Solution? Praise Baby DVD set to just the children's voices.

  78. 10 and 9, 8 and 7, 6 and 5 and 4,
call upon the savior while you may.
3 and 2, coming through, the clouds in bright array,
the countdown's getting closer every day.

  79. I was thinking "Pharoah, Pharoah" as well. LOVED that song but then we were not allowed to sing it anymore since it had a "hip-thrust" motion. The uberconservatives in the church didn't think it was right that pre-teens make that motion. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

And I'm in agreement. . .Cheeseburger is the best VT song with the Pirates in a close second. Gotta stick witha little more old school VT (which actually brings up more of an argument for The Hairbrush Song). My bro actually used The Hairbrush Song to teach the different parts of opera to his HS choir students!

  80. Of course, when I was a child we sang those silly flappy songs like:

A Mighty Fortress is our God a Bulwark Never fail-ail-ail-ling!

  81. What about "Give Me Oil in My Lamp?" There were like 5,000 verses of that song, my favorite being:

give me gas in my Ford
keep me truckin' for the Lord
give me gas in my Ford, I pray...

  82. @Megan! The "I've got the wonderful love of my blessed Redeemer way down in the depths of my heart" verse was always the best! They might still be my favorite lyrics...

    YEESSSS
Pharoah Pharoah is still the best.. with a bunch of dirty campers singing it. OMG story of my life!!

    ReplyDelete
  83. This may have already been said, but you need a category of movement songs... "Father Abraham", "Deep & Wide", "Sunrise, Sunset". I laughed out loud at Elizabeth's comment on "Bubbling in my soul".

In all the years my Mom did children church (over 20), I was always jealous that she could touch her toes on "Head & Shoulders, Knees and Toes (Clap your hands and Praise Him)". I still can't touch my toes, so I incorporate a slight knee bend when I sing along.

  84. Ooh.. what about the hairbrush song???

    ReplyDelete
  85. Does anyone know the rest of the words to my favorite song? The chorus goes "chocolate, chocolate, Jesus is sweeter than chocolate." Definitely belongs on the mix tape.

Now that I'm on food songs, how about
I like bananas? I know that mangoes are sweet. I like papaya(PAPAYA!), but nothing can beat thuh-uh-uh sweet love of God.
I sing it in my head every time I eat a mango or a papaya. Which is most days since I live in Africa.

  86. The best Veggie Tales song is In The Belly of the Whale, closely followed by Dance of the Cucumber, but if you're looking for serious schtick you can't go past the country classic;

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Make me, oh make me, Lord more than I am
Make me a piece in your master game plan
Free from the earthly tempestion below
I’ve got the will, Lord if you’ve got the toe.

    Drop kick me Jesus ...
Take all the brothers who’ve gone on before
And all of the sisters who’ve knocked on your door
All the departed dear loved ones of mine
Stick’em up front in the offensive line.

    Drop kick me Jesus ...

  87. My favorite VBS song is "Father Abraham."
And does anyone know who Jana Alayra is? This summer when I counseled at camp, the only songs we did were her songs and "Pharoh, Pharoh."

  88. I am a huge fan of this blog, first off. And your VBS Mixtape homage got me thinking of a somewhat-unrelated tie-in for my Word-of-the-Day blog. So double thanks for inspiration and laughter!

  89. veggie tales cheeseburger song = brilliance on toast. Also who could forget the Pharoah song! "Pharoah pharoah, OOOOOOOOOOOO BABY let my people go HU HAH! YEAH YEAH YEAH!"

Actually come to think of it, most of the boys thought that song was about sex too by the time they were 10.

  90. The cheeseburger song is good, but I gotta go with "The Promised Land" especially the version done by Sanctus Real."

  91. How about "Jesus, is the Rock and he rolls my blues away?"

    ReplyDelete
  92. I second the "I am C" song. We do it as part of a retreat activity for college students. However, I suggest using posters to spell out CHRISTIAN, and when your letter is said, you raise it and dance your heart out. Priceless.

  93. I can't believe that no one has mentioned another great spelling song.

O-B-E-Y Obey your mom and dad.
O-B-E-Y It makes them very glad.
Listen to the words they say.
    Obey your parents every day.
O-B-E-Y Obey your mom and dad.

  94. Just got back from our church's Family Camp, where "Pharoah Pharoah" is so popular, it has to be rationed out and only sung as a special treat.

And once during the week, they call all the dads up to the front to sing it. Talk about your photo op.

(Our church banned the "hip-thrust" beat of the song back when my kids were little -- we sing "Let my people go free free" instead -- but this year I noticed the high-schoolers are starting to bring the hip-thrust back.)

So my vote's for "Pharoah Pharoah." And "The Cheeseburger Song."

  98. Our kids loved the Joy Joy verse that goes"If the devil doesn't like it he can sit on a tack; OUCH! Sit on a tack; Ouch Sit on a tack!

And what about the veggie tales "Song of Cebu"? It was the inspiration for our name
