#587. Booty, God, Booty and the 4 Word Gospel.

Last Sunday, Pete Wilson and the insanely talented staff at Cross Point Church in Nashville and Dickson invited me to come speak. I'd never spoken at a church before and I'm not going to lie, the prospect of doing it four times in one day had me a little sweaty.

The title of the message is "Adam & the Three Questions" but if you watch it you'll notice things from Stuff Christians Like such as Booty, God, Booty, the Prayer Shotblock and Thinking You're Naked. You'll also notice the robot, which I did within the first 5 minutes.

I can't thank Pete and Dave and Anne and the whole Cross Point staff enough. Without further ado, here is the message from last week. Happy Friday

  1. Ok, I'm 9 minutes into it and you have captured my attention and made me laugh and think so far. This is awesome. You are a GREAT speaker! I thank God I came across your blog. Thank you for your ministry!

  2. I just finished watching it. You have no idea how badly I needed to hear that "I am not naked." Thank you.

  3. Late for work now. BUT OH SO WORTH THE TIME.

Thanks Jon! May God bless your obedience and give you more and more to share.

  4. So good.

Just what I needed to confirm to a friend I am ministering to. 'Be sick, Be LOVED'! Just what she needs to hear.

And I also got so much out of it.

  5. Arrgh! I've got to call a PC guru. I haven't been able to see videos posted on blogs for a few months now. All I see is a big white box with a tiny multi-color box in the left-hand corner. Up until now, it hasn't mattered, but this is one video I don't want to miss! Any suggestions for correcting this?

(Did I mention I have a degree in Computer Science - from 25 years ago - and my husband is an ITS Director?)

  7. I have followed your blog ministry since its inception.

Perhaps you are destined, too, to a preaching ministry!

  8. "...but I didn't because I'm wise and discerning."

    funny

So thankful you gave God your dirty bowl. Well done my friend.

Hilarious. This is great Jon, keep up your ministry man. I'm lovin' this stuff.

  10. Thank you for posting the video - I was so glad for the chance to hear you speak! "I am the Alpha and the Omega, and I know your name..." - I'm walking with this today. Also, the story about your daughter expressing shame for the first time made my heart break for my own memories of this realization but also rejoice that your daughter is blessed with a father who is watching, listening, and fighting for her heart. Can I just say how proud I am of you? I am really enjoying your writing and so thankful that I found your blog.

  11. Great stuff Jon. I am sure that God will provide you with many more speaking opportunities.

  12. Jon,

Let me just say you have a lot of great things to say and they are really life changing kind of things, but ... how do I say this. You have turned into a traveling evangelist. Yeah sorry to be the one to have to tell you this.

Seriously you did great. My only complaint is that it is a lot of the same stories I've heard, but it was great hearing you share them instead of reading them. Now I know how to read what you are writing.

  13. thanks- that was really nice. I was glad for the Booty God Booty re-explination.... I thought I'd read everything on here, but I have missed that and never knew what others were taliking about when they referenced it... I thought it might have somthing to do with pirates!

  15. That was the worst robot ever! But funny message :)

  16. Thanks for sharing, Jon. That was great. Very real. That's the kind of preaching I like. It doesn't have to be loud and in your face. It just has to be real and challenging. Thanks.

  17. WooHoo! Fantastic job! And I did take notes as I watched this. I loved the soccer field to postage stamp story and the reminder about fame! The 4 word gospel is great. You will do this again, I can tell.

  18. You are totally street..loved it!

  19. this was so encouraging AND funny! i'm so glad you got this speaking opportunity and were able to share it with us. thanks again for speaking such great and hilarious truths!

  21. Enjoyed seeing you here (went to the 11:45) - glad to have this available to share now!

Thanks for being open and shooting straight.

  22. That was awesome. I'm getting ready to go see an R-rated movie with a friend, and now I am convicted about my day being B-G-B. :)

  23. Jon, I was one of CrossPoint multitude who attended one of these sermons in Nashville with my teenage daughter. We both enjoyed and learned so look at some things in a completely different way. The bonus was I now know about your blog and have been enjoying it daily. Keep on Blessing!

  26. This is the sort of teaching style that will go farthest in reaching a generation that doesn't give a flip about what Jesus has to say.
I have to give you 'propers' for this.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Really enjoyed it Jon. I also liked that we got to see the "stuff that happens during the prayer" at the end.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yay!! So awesome!
You talk differently than I hear you in my head.

  29. greatest video intro i've ever seen in the history of ever. i really liked your point about fame. and im not sure what was up with the lack of laughter in that crowd, but i was dying.

  30. I think it's ironic that I had my first post-sermon-break-down-in-tears experience after watching this.

    Thanks.

  31. No graphic T-shirt? Kind of figured you'd work in a shot of your Pumas too.

  32. Great message Jon! It's been forwarded. Your BGB post is arguably my favorite (though I probably have 510+ still to read).

  33. oh great...after watching this...my two year old is walking around saying..God-booty"..."God-booty"..

It was great to hear you speak!

  34. John,
You are such a good speaker. Maybe I'm weird, but I didn't laugh uproariously. I was amused and I thoroughly enjoyed this though. Thank you so much for sharing all that you do.

  35. Listened to this while getting ready for a mission trip I'm leading tomorrow. And by "getting ready" I mean downloading "Man in the Mirror", fighting the urge to bring a fanny pack and rehearsing my "no purpling" speech. This was very refreshing & I'm excited to share some of it with my teens!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm glad that you shared this with us. I can so tell that you are street. Seriously, I was blessed by this message, and I really needed to hear this. You really let God use you to get His message across.

    ReplyDelete
  37. OMG. That is awesome. I'm sharing this with my congregation (by linking to your blog, natch.)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I liked the fact that you had already shared some of these stories on your blog. I like better how you were able to interweave the stories into one theme. Excellent job.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks for sharing that with us! It's great to hear and see you talking about the blog and the posts we all love so much!

  40. "home to hut in 2.4 seconds" I love it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Loved this. Booty God Booty was epic but the "Who told you that you were naked?" is so amazingly practical. Great lesson.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Good stuff...

it's funny though, I've been reading SCL since its early beginnings...when post numbers were below 100s (heck I even have a PDF file of the first chapter of the book when Jon was happily distributing it for free :-)
and judging by your writing style I was expecting a complete different attitude/style as a speaker...hmm

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's been a rough few weeks. I needed to hear I'm not naked. And I also needed to hear, despite being sick, I am loved. Thank you.

PS--just because you wear a retainer at night does not mean you aren't cool. Trust me! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wonderful talk, Jon! Somehow I expected you to be more manic "in person" but you managed to act remarkably calm. ;-) Thanks for the message, yet I still remain concerned that stretching my boundaries for God *will* mean a grass mission hut somewhere. Oh no!

  45. So, when does the Jon Acuff speaking your start?

You can have a dvd as well, you could call it 'the gods aren't angry' or 'everything is spiritual'.

    oh wait...

Great talk, I hope you enjoyed the experience.

  46. The thing that is intriguing about you Jon is that when you strip away all of the goofiness of your humor your message is insightful and fresh and you can absolutely feel your earnestness, which surprised me only a little. It was a great message, really glad I had the time to watch it. Next time though, skittles and a piece of cardboard for some proper break dancing. Lose the Robot. ; )

  47. My two favorite Pastors merged together, SCL speaking on PDub's platform!

Exactly what I was hoping for, right on mark, great message!

  48. K sent me the link to the audio as soon as it was live, so I had listened to this already. But it was even better to see it in video. You continue to amaze me. If I had a criticism, it would be that I wish it was 10 minutes longer, so we'd get even more. But I'm selfish and greedy that way. Well done, Jon.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well done. You made it look easy. I especially liked the mustard ice cream and the face band-aid. You did a good job of linking your stories very naturally to the spiritual application without forcing anything.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm also thankful for the Booty, God, Booty re-explanation, as I'd missed it somehow - its a great thought and I loved this message. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  51. This is awesome!!! Wow just when I thought I couldn't love your blog or your twitter anymore... you go and preach! Great word!! Be Sick...Be Loved!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Dude ... "whose acknowledgement of you will stand next to mine." - that is gold.

Enjoyed listening to you speak. Thanks for the thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hearing the story of the kid saying he was okay with the mustard on his ice cream made my heart hurt. Shame is such a powerful thing....

    ReplyDelete
  54. That was an amazing message. Thanks! I'm a seminary student and I definitely appreciate the daily bits of reality I am able to get from your blog. The Bible and SCL keep me grounded. Can't wait for the book to come out!

  55. Great message. LOVED the common verse normal part.

But I encourage you to go just one size smaller with your shirts. One day you will be bigger than you are now and will have to hide your gut. You're not there yet. Plus bigger shirts make you look like you're swimming in them. Smaller shirts will make your muscles more visible. Flaunt your size while you can. Best bit of advice the church fashionistas (i.e. metrosexual worship leaders) gave me.

  56. Awesome Jon! I'm studying for a final, but somethings are worth putting on hold. Keep it up:)

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm 7+ minutes in and am thinking two things.

    1. Tell the truth, how old are you? 12, 13? 16? You look very young. If you are 30 or so you should be praising Jesus for making you look young. If you were a woman I'd be jealous of you. But you are a man so I can share with you in the 'I look 15 years younger than I am' club.

    And...
    2. You sound American lol. All this time of reading your blog you sounded British in my head. Maybe next time you speak you can put on a British accent for me?

:) Anyway, back to the message and I agree with the others, well done!

  58. When you start to say something serious or you are saying main points...You get quiet...like you want us to really focus because these three points will change our lives!

    Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  59. You're a great speaker. Just what I needed to hear. I actually cried. Thank you.

  60. Friday night and watching with hubby...THIS was GREAT. You are blessed with the ability to write well AND deliver it in person. We loved it all. Thank you!

  61. Jon,
Great job. That's all I can say. Oh, and I'm glad you worked the "Famous" story in there. That was my favorite post.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Wow, I don't think I've ever watch a video this long on the internet. God is using those words to work in my heart!
Thank you for sharing that, I was so blessed. I am so guilty of "Booty, God, Booty".
So grateful that the Great Physician came to heal me, the sick.
I have read your blog for a long time and I pray that you will continue to use it to His glory!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I thank you so much for posting this video and letting me hear the word of God so clearly. I often get lost in my own head with my worries, mistakes and what others may or may not think of me. Thank you for reminding me that I need not be perfect for God to love me but I do need to let Him into my heart more and not give him just a postage stamp space to work with.

on a lighter note: yes teen wolf 1 was the best one : )

    Good message.

  65. Well done, Jon!

Believe it or not, I had never heard the "Booty God Booty" story.

(And I call myself a SCL 'fan.' PSHAW.)

    ReplyDelete
  66. I've watched half of the video, and the rest refuses to play :(
Sigh, maybe tomorrow. You're too popular dude. Even with the retainer and the unibrow...

    ReplyDelete
  67. excellent stuff, Jon,

recommendation: (extrapolation, perhaps), where you stop and ponder the metaphor of the bus to heaven, DON'T... go read (reread?) C.S. Lewis' The Great Divorce... there's a bus to heaven in it. gorgeous... theologically trying to some perhaps, but i still like the idea of the bus to heaven, even if we don't actually believe in it... or something...

  68. You knocked the frenchin' cover off the ball. Great, great stuff.

I watched it last night, then carried the laptop upstairs and made my wife watch it with me again. She loved it, too.

    Keep up the great work.

  69. Soooo good. Thanks, Jon. Keep being a vessel.

  70. jon you are brilliant. thank you.

  71. I was fascinated by your prayer hands, and by your armband/watch. But the words definitely hit home too.

Are we allowed to / able to steal this message to play at other churches/small groups?

    ReplyDelete
  72. A perfect beginning to my Sunday morning!! The point about common vs. normal hit the nail right on the head. Like, THE nail right on THE head. It's so true. Next time you should highlight razzle dazzle :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. I enjoyed your message. I always appreciate soft-spoken messages, because so much more effort has to go into word crafting to keep people engaged, without relying on volume. (It's one of the things I love about Pete.)
I laughed and I had a lot to ponder as well. Great job!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Thanks, Jon! Your words about wanting fame hit home! God bless!

  76. 1. You are a TERRIFIC speaker! Very engaging.
    2. You look way younger than I thought you were.
    3. Your nearly-30-minutes of awesomeness was compounded by a billion in the last 15 seconds when the metrosexualest worship leader I've ever seen crossed the screen. AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I just finished watching this for the second time and I was just so moved by the picture of the boy stirring the mustard into his ice cream. I have so been there in my walk. Thank you for posting this video!

    ReplyDelete
  78. So proud of the way God is using you!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thank you so much for sharing this video with us, and moments of your life as a father too. Thank you mostly for letting God use you to minister to all of us!

On a side note...do you ever do speaking engagements? Like to youth group camps/outings?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Thanks so much, Jon. This was definitely something I needed to hear. Please keep doing what you're doing! It's so awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Loved hearing you at CP Dickson last weekend! I have been saying "booty, God, booty" all week. The people at work are sick of me!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Wow. I loved the message.

But I have to confess I didn't close my eyes during the prayer and saw people walking across the stage behind you.

I need to pray about that.

    ReplyDelete
  83. You are an excellent speaker, Jon. You say you are just a writer (and from one writer to another, a very good one at that), but you are also a very talented speaker.

All the best for future speaking opportunities!
