Sometimes I think my posts are too long. I mean honestly, do I really need four written pages to explain to you the depths of my love for eagles and side hugs?
Probably not, which is why I am trying to be better at trimming these posts down. That's why I left off a few pastors from my Super Hero Guide. But many of you raised some good points about the folks excluded. So next Friday, the 11th, I am posting part 2. (I don't know if it should be called "The return of" or "The son of" or simply, "Part Deux.")
Here is a list of the new pastors I will add to the guide. If you think there is someone else that needs to be on there, post a comment please:
Bill Hybels
John Piper
Tim Keller
James Dobson (not technically a pastor but folks asked for him)
Erwin McManus
Joyce Meyer
Jerry Falwell
How about 2 of the 'most cartoonish' characters of the Christian right wing... John Hagee (Penguin?) and Pat Robertson (Joker?)
ReplyDeletetim keller! how could i forget?! he's a little bit bruce wayne/batman, living in gotham and all, but i guess that spot's taken.
ReplyDeletelooking forward to what you come up with!
francis chan. reminds me of abe sapien from hellboy...its probably the quick wit and freakishly long fingers.
ReplyDeleteMatt Chandler from the Village Church: http://www.thevillagechurch.net/
ReplyDeleteThe object of many a man-crush.
RC Sproul for the really hard core Calvinists who think John Piper is a little too nice.
ReplyDeleteIf you put Dobson on there, then you have to put Dave Ramsey! Was there ever a Captain Cash?!
ReplyDeleteWhile most of your readers might not know him since he has been dead for a while, you might also consider Fulton Sheen. He wore a cope, which looks a lot like a cape. Both of his shows ran on prime time on ABC and DuMont networks respectively, his first show "Life is Worth Living" won an Emmy.
ReplyDeleteplease add brian mclaren!
ReplyDeleteps: i personally love your long posts. keep 'em coming!
You definitely need to add that crazy televangelist Kerney Thomas lol he's nuts
ReplyDeleteJohn MacArthur!!
ReplyDeleteLouie Giglio
ReplyDeletewhat superero would Ravi Zacharias be?
ReplyDeleteHow about Todd Bentley?
Ravi Zacharias...come on!!!
ReplyDeletetodd bentley. he's a character all right :)
ReplyDeletehttp://youtube.com/watch?v=exb53K2v4pk
what about jesse jackson and al sharpton?? :)
Matthew Barnett as Robin maybe?
ReplyDeleteHow about Howard Dayton from Crown Financial Ministries? Maybe he's not a pastor but he is a minister! I don't know very many superheroes, but I'm sure you could find one for this dude.
ReplyDeletePaul and Jan Crouch
ReplyDeleteWonder-Twin Powers activate! In the form of...
OK, I got nothin'. I just want the Wonder Twins to be represented. Benny Hinn could be Gleek, the monkey??
Did I just write that for all to see? Oh, for shame.
Oh I just thought of another guy. Don Everts. He has written a handful of books, including: Jesus With Dirty Feet, and The Smell of Sin and The Fresh Air of Grace. He is very active in college ministy, more specifically with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He is rad and deserves to be have a superhero alias.
ReplyDeleteI second the Chandler suggestion. His voice has been known to cause small earthquakes.
ReplyDeleteI think Dan Kimball should be in here. He IS the hero for Emergent Church.
ReplyDeleteDon't overlook Dan Kimball. He IS the hero of the Emergent Church!
ReplyDeleteI completely second Matt Chandler!
ReplyDeletealso, what about Tommy Nelson? The man is pretty much a staple down here in Texas.
Charles Stanley? Not pastors, but Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort leave themselves wide open for creative license. Chuck Swindoll. Ravi Zacharias. Louie Giglio.
ReplyDeleteGreat site. It's (sadly) one of the highlights of my day.
What about Tony Evans?
ReplyDeleteLouie Giglio
ReplyDeleteFrancis Chan
FOR THE RECORD: i perused my local borders spiritual growth section today and saw a whole stack of books by td jakes. i don't recall the title, all i remember is that he was given a full-body picture on the cover. i pulled the book off the shelf, showed it to my hub, and said, 'now, doesn't this guy look JUST LIKE the incredible hulk, except without, you know, the green skin?' he agreed. you win.
ReplyDeleteMatthew Barnett or his dad Tommy Barnett
ReplyDeleteyou decide which one
Don't forget Brian McLaren!
ReplyDeleteFrom the shadows of tomorrow...it's PoMoMan!
What about John Eldredge, Craig Gross, Shane Claiborne, and Pete
ReplyDeleteGreig? These guys are definitely impacting the current age of Christianity.
It'll be interesting to see what character you use for Dobson. Is there a freaky thug character?
ReplyDeleteJohn Ortberg?
ReplyDeleteJohn MacArthur
ReplyDeleteC.J. Mahaney
Either you guys are taking the cartoon thing literally or you are getting pretty liberal with who you think a preacher is!
ReplyDeleteDavid Nasser - love the guy, and I can only imagine what superhero you come up with! Also agree on having Erwin McManus in here somewhere.
ReplyDeletevery clever posts, but I still either shudder or giggle uncontrollably to see Jerry Falwell and Erwin McManus on the same list.
ReplyDeletei don't like this guy at all but everytime i turn on the tv it seems tbn has benny hinn on. of course he might be funny to post about.
ReplyDeleteERWIN LUTZER...He has pastored HISTORIC Moody Church for almost 30 years now...
ReplyDeleteyou forgot Ernest Ainsley........stacey for luville......good one......
ReplyDeleteBe careful with John Piper. He's currently worshiped as a god in the blogsphere. One misplaced word and you could lose half your readership!
ReplyDeleteYo PJ,
ReplyDeleteI’m a newbie here; I think perusing this site will be like a crash course in all things Christian for me. I hope to be fluent in a few months and become aware of who these pastors are and what makes them so ripe for satire. I gather you are not a pastor but, it appears you have a flock nonetheless. May I encourage you to add your name to the list to be assigned a superhero persona next week? How about Robin or Flash? Is Scooby Doo a superhero? Sorry, I did date throughout my school years and have never read a comic book, so I cannot pinpoint your true alter ego. You could offer readers a chance to characterize you, or would you prefer to reveal your super-identity yourself? Isn’t there a clause under the Golden Rule indicating you should be willing to step up to this challenge? However, I do suggest, no matter how tempted you may be to go for an extra laugh, not to also post a photo of you posing as your super-heroic self donning splashy tights.
I’m eagerly looking forward to the 11th.
Louie Giglio
ReplyDeleteKerry Shook
Jon, your doing a great job with the site! Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteBut maybe you can do a Villains list like you did a Superheroes list.
God knows as much as we have superhero pastors we have villain ones.
Ed Young, Jr.....he totally rocks! He is the only pastor I have seen use cantelopes as a prop in a sermon! ha!
ReplyDeleteMatt Chandler and Tommy Nelson!!!
ReplyDeleteI third Francis and Louie.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you're adding Keller. I have over 140 of his sermons, and his teachings have really informed my theology and helped me better understand God's grace.
ReplyDeleteYet another for Matt Chandler, other than the fact that he may look a little like the Green Lantern I have know idea what superhero he would be, but is definitly ahead of some if not most on your list.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Louie Gigleo, which super hero is he?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely John MacArthur and Ravi Zacharias and Joyce Meyer.
ReplyDeleteBut, rootin' for my local guys, I also say John Maxwell and David Jeremiah.
And in Kenya (not sure if he's as popular in the US) there's a really famous preacher named Creflo Dollar. Not sure if that's his real name, and not sure I want to know.
Really no Max Lucado.
ReplyDeleteAlso on a completly unrelated note; I wanted to give you props the other day for using the term tender ronis - That word can't be used enough!
If you're counting Dobson you gotta do La Haye. Sex AND end times theology--what could be more heroic?
ReplyDeleteJudah Smith!
ReplyDeletei dunno what superhero he'd be matched up with, but i consider him a superhero for my Generation.
craig gross!! you missed craig gross!!
ReplyDeleteYou have the Superheroes, I know it's a bit risque, but what about the supervillains? You know the Pastors we all love to not like-so-much, even demonize? They exist. At least in the minds of the people.
ReplyDeletehow 'bout James MacDonald? Greg Laurie, Bob Coy? Oh, how about Reggie Joiner?? Though I'm not sure which super heroes they'd be...
ReplyDeleteaaaarrrrrggghhh!!!!!! Fulton Sheen scares the -------- um, something unwholesome--------- out of me!
ReplyDeleteJudah Smith
ReplyDeleteCraig Gross
2 of my fav ppl
and how bout Brain Houston? is he well known?
augustino, that comment was just awesome.
ReplyDeleteKay Arthur has been, by far, my mentor in teaching me how to be confident in understanding the word of God. she is changing the world for Christ, translating bible studies into many, many languages. beth moore too is a great woman of God.
ReplyDeleteMark Batterson - He needs to be Captain America. His church is in the Capitol City.
ReplyDeleteJudah Smith
ReplyDeleteFrancis Chan
Pete Grieg
Those are my votes :o)
Spacey,
ReplyDeleteWhy does Fulton Sheen scare you, are you afraid of Catholics? If you want to talk about a clergymen being culturally relevant, he was. At the time he was one of the most ardent anti-communist in America. He preached Christ and never tried to proselytize his audience. Calling him unwholesome is really uncalled for. He was and is the most famous non-evangelical clergy on TV in the US, and as such merits mentioning. And plus he wore a Cope, and that looks like a cape and Super Heros wear capes. And no I'm not Catholic, I just think he was a good man and great orator. To be honest some of the people on the list scare me, but I keep it to myself.
This is probably asking too much and raising too many issues, but... What comic book characters would Kenneth Copeland, Joyce Meyer, Leroy Thompson, Benny Hinn and others qualify as?
ReplyDeleteDoug Pagitt
ReplyDeleteHow about Benny Hinn as the Disney farm yard duck Foghorn Leghorn ... you could call him Benny Henn
ReplyDeleteI realize this isn't a cartoon superhero, but a still a cartoon...
is brian houston well known?
ReplyDeletei consider Hillsong to be one of the most well known churches in the world, maybe not as much in america, but yeah, i'd say he's pretty well known....
1. Judah Smith
2. Brian Houstn
3. then maybe Craig Gross, i think he's a great guy, but no where near the same level Judah and Houston would be.
Hello? Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker!
ReplyDeleteAdam Hamilton of Church of the Resurrection has probably the largest, most vibrant UMC church in America.
ReplyDeleteLouie Giglio!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd Beth Moore isn't "technically" a pastor either, so I think it's okay...
brian mcclaren, spencer burke (founder of theooze.com), mark batterson, dan kimball, carrot top, dave gibbons, pat robertson, david cloud (not super famous but very worthy of superhero status see www.wayoflife.org keeps me up for hours reading all the stuff thats apostacy....he can help keep ccm out of your church)
ReplyDeleteGreg Laurie, definently! He's HUGE out here in So. Cal! And Chuck Smith too!
ReplyDeleteJD Greear
ReplyDeletenot that I'm a fan, but I would love to see Benny Hinn up there.
ReplyDeleteLouie Giglio
ReplyDeleteCraig Gross
Dude! What about Ted Haggert? What kind of superhero would he be?
ReplyDeleteProbably too controversial of a subject.
We really need to know where Paige Patterson (who has the coolest hair in all of the Southern Baptist convention) resides in the superhero list.
ReplyDeleteDefinately Louie and Francis and Brian Houston get my votes!!
ReplyDeleteI know he's not with us anymore, but what abour Dr. Bill Bright?
ReplyDelete-John Hall
Fresno, CA
Marci-
ReplyDeleteBeth Moore is indeed a great woman of God and she is in the first list of superhero pastor-type people.
Definitely Judah Smith, love his preaching...
ReplyDeleteAlso what about Jesse Duplantis and Jentzen Franklin?
Both noteworthy preachers in my opinion...
Not sure how well known they are in "the States" but what about the leaders of the huge HILLSONG Church in Australia
ReplyDeleteBrian and Bobbie Houston?
Just a thought!
:)
Thanks Jon, I love the site!
C!
Pat Robertson looks more like the Penguin than the Joker... But thats just Mine and Batmans opinion.
ReplyDeleteLucado! Though I've no idea what his super-hero alter ego is. I totally second the post that suggested you reveal your alter-ego!
ReplyDeleteMore votes from me for Charles Stanley and Tim LaHaye (never underestimate the power of Beverly LaHaye either!)
ReplyDelete
