Bob Schneider is one of my favorite musicians on the planet. He is a songwriter of catastrophic talent and his lyrics are beautiful and challenging. He once wrote a song about God. It explored some really interesting concepts about who God is in some ways that could easily be taken as offensive. So, Bob was forced to change the lyrics and in a brilliant stroke of sarcasm explained the whole situation this way:"We had to change one word in the song. Basically because I was just afraid we were going to offend a lot of people. Basically I'm all about the money when it comes to making records. It's cash first. It's give me the money and you know ^&*# art, as it were, %8#@ the original artistic integrity of the song. Just make sure that I can appeal to as many people as humanly possible so that I can make the most amount of money so that I can have the biggest, fanciest steaks and most comfortable socks to wear on my feet. So, anyways, we changed one of the words."
One of the reasons Bob had pushback was that some people understandably felt the song made light of the Lord. It did not respect the seriousness of God. And I was reminded of the Bob/God incident recently by a comment someone left on this site. It was a good comment, well written and I felt very honest, but one of the lines stuck out to me:
"Children's programs that substitute for regular services do your kids the disservice of not inculcating the seriousness of God."
I confess, I had to look up "inculcating" because I'm not so smart and it means "to teach." That sentence is only one line of a much longer comment and the next line starts out with "God is joyful," so it's not that the author sees God as a monster of seriousness. But I was paused on this line because it forced me to wrestle with a question:
"Do people have a harder time seeing God as a serious entity or seeing God as a joyful, loving entity?"
I know the answer in my own life. I have never, ever struggled to see God as a serious individual. I have never doubted that when you enter His court, there are serious issues on the table and serious discussions and serious missions. In addition to writing about how I have often "painted God mad," I would say that for more than 30 years on this planet, I have been awash in the seriousness of God.
But love has been so much harder. Seeing God as someone that laughs with me and kids with me and rolls down hills of grass with me on lazy Tuesdays in June has been such a bigger challenge. Seeing Him as someone that cares about the little things that no one else notices or as someone that collects my tears in a jar as Psalms says has been difficult. Believing that it gives Him joy to see me writing or playing Frisbee or a million other things has been hard.
Things are changing though. In the last few years, He has been showing me that He is more flowers than thistles more laughter than wrath, more open hand than closed fist. Is He serious? Without a doubt. Do I still feel like it's a big deal to come into His court? Certainly, only now I think it's OK to arrive there by water slide.
Bob Schneider closes his song about God, which I am not saying you should go listen to, by writing something I think is true of my own life now.
and I can believe
what can't be known for sure
the things that might be
the things that never were
and still not know a thing in the end
and still believe that God is my friend
I'd like to close this post with a small opportunity. It's been a wild, beautiful week at SCL with 120 comments on bringing kids to church and more than 85 on Jessica Simpson. And next week is going to get a little wilder with some of the topics we'll discuss.
I thought it might be cool to share something today. I'd love to just open up the idea of expressing who God is. To confess or laugh or shout or share or whatever you feel like doing on a Friday.
I'll go first with three of my own "God is" statements:
God is serious, serious about loving me in any way possible.
God is ridiculous to me.
God is big enough for my anger, small enough for my whispers and strong enough for my worries.
So what do you think?
Finish this statement as many times as you want:
God is ________
God is ________
God is bigger than my definitions.
ReplyDelete(And if it's true, I totally can't wait for the water slide.)
this was a great post. thank you.
ReplyDeleteGod is a little intimidating.
God is more loving than I thought.
God is really patient.
God is with my dad when he is sick.
ReplyDeleteGod is with me when I don't know what to do about it.
God is with me when I cry.
God made extra long Disney movies so I could let it all out - alone!
God will be her for the duration.
God is all I have, so that means I have all I need.
And it's God who gives me the strength to believe and know all this is so very true.
God is my delieverer. He brought me out of a pit this week.
ReplyDeleteGod is my provider. Somehow, by His grace, we continue to have food on the table every day. There are days I am honestly not sure how it happens.
God is fun! He cares about the fun stuff! He cares that we like to have a good time, and He wants to have a good time with us!
God IS. He IS there. His existence shines over my life, an I cannot deny He is there.
God is good, God is love, God is magnificant, God is infinite.
And He loves me enough to call me up into things I don't want to do to show me things I don't want to see. And then He is good enough to bring resoration and peace.
So that is who God is to me this week, this tumultuous week I have had. Thanks for giving me the forum in which to share, Jon.
God is...absolutely in love with me.
ReplyDeleteGod is Love.
ReplyDeleteI think that pretty much includes everything.
God is Running towards me with open arms (luke 15:20)
ReplyDeleteGod is creative
God is a show off :P
God is powerful
God is unexplainable... there arent many words that actually do Him justice...
God is a mystery, cos just when i think i've figured Him out... AHHH! I realise i haven't!
I'm a HUGE Bob Schneider fan. And I've let others listen to that song before and yes, some have been offended (so I don't offer up anything from his live shows for them to listen to!!). But I love this song. Nobody's God is the same. We make our own interpretations based on many things.
ReplyDeleteThere are so, so many things I dislike about organized religion - one of which is them telling me what to think and feel about something that we all have different, personal experiences with. That's BS.
Morris Abel Beer wrote:
Who builds a church within his heart
And takes it with him everywhere
Is holier far than he whose church
Is but a one day house of prayer.
Church has some good things about it. But it's inherently flawed because it's made up of flawed people and it's not for everyone.
And I'll go with Bob on this one, God is my friend.
god is christian
ReplyDeletegod is muslim
god is nature
god is love
god is wonder
god is hope
god is fear
God is terrible.
ReplyDeleteThis post reminded me of a book I read called The Shack. It's a pretty cool book and change my whole perspective of how I think of God. I bet you'd like it Jon.
ReplyDeleteGod is someone that wants to live life with us.
God is wild and unpredictable.
ReplyDeleteGod is as serene and calming as the sea after a storm.
God is watching me dance through His world, and smiling.
God is ironic, but He pulls irony in such a way that you end up humbled. But it usually hurts until you realize what He did.
ReplyDeleteGod is my Father. I was blessed to have a great earthly dad who had a joke for every occasion (and that probably includes funerals if I rack my brain hard enough), and yet could be very serious about things that were important. He also had a temper. If anyone hurt someone in his family, God help them. He played checkers with me, took me to amusement parks, talked about God and politics. He was joyful, and serious. I always wanted to please him, which wasn't hard, because he loved me, and yet sometimes was hard, because he loved me, you know what I mean?
ReplyDeleteGod is all that, a thousand fold.
God is transcendantly beautiful and perfectly holy and just while being more intimately aware of our needs than we are so He loves us beyond what we can think or imagine.
ReplyDeleteThough I can't say it better than our Westminster forefathers. The answer to Shorter catechism #4:
"God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth."
God is more understanding of my faults than I deserve.
ReplyDeleteGod is laughing at my small-minded idea of a plan for my life.
God is out-of-control loving.
God is bigger than the finals I have to take next week.
God is bigger than the boogie man. :)
God is challenging me to see as He sees, to love as He loves.
ReplyDeleteYah...I am the first one!
ReplyDeleteGod is beyond giving
God is my best friend
God is the one who hears my three year olds prayers...even when they seem strange to me (sorry, big one)
God is all I will ever need
"God is strong enough for my worries"
ReplyDeleteSorry to copy you but that just really resonated with me, since my family is preparing to move to Tanzania to be missionaries and I need His strength now more than ever.
I'm new to your blog and love it :)
God is smarter than I am. I remind myself of that every time things don't seem to be going the way I want them to.
ReplyDeleteGod is the reason I am a NEW man.
ReplyDeleteHere's a characteristic of God we overlook: God is creative.
ReplyDeletei needed this today. thanks.
ReplyDeletei love bob's statement. i wish we christians were more offended by censorship, shocked by an artist compromising his art for market pressure.
God is excited that I'm taking my kids to the circus tonight.
God is complicated.
ReplyDeleteThe seriousness of the Big Guy may be why I have always had an easier time identifying with and praying to God the Son rather than God the Father (still not always sure about that Holy Spirit thing). "God" is loving. He's also the one who does all the wrath-distributing. Jesus walked and talked here and made lots of friends. It probably sounds really weird and a tad insane, but I always thought Jesus would be more fun. And a little more...forgiving. Less likely to strike me down. I don't know.
About the inculcating and big church debate...Jesus wanted the little children to come to him. He never said "and I only hang out at big church".
Thanks for bringing a Texas Treasure like Bob to a decidedly different audience. I've always loved "God is my Friend." Rather than being offended, though, I look at it as an honest assessment from someone who isn't in the "Christian" camp. Bob probably represents the feelings and opinions of a lot of people in our culture. We would do well to listen and learn how they think and feel. (I'd also recommend "Long Way to Get" on the same album.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for always making me think and laugh.
God is surprising.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post, Jon. I had tears welled up and ready to roll.
ReplyDeleteGod is my refuge.
God is my strength.
God is my portion.
God is awesome in power and glory.
God is steadfast and His love endures forever.
God is great and greatly to be praised!
God is infinitely more than we can ever think or imagine.
ReplyDeleteGod is not impressed by how many facts you can use to prove his existence.
ReplyDeleteGod is not in any need of proving.
God is a tidal wave of love and validation that takes away the hunger for anything but more of him.
God is sad that we keep settling for other things, but continues to seek after us because he wants to.
God is love. But that's a lot different than saying "love is God."
ReplyDeleteI really think which side you tend to err on (having a hard time seeing God as serious v. having a hard time seeing God as joyful or loving) has a lot to do with your church background. Most who grew up in conservative evangelicalism would fall into your camp Jon - I know I do. But I've seen plenty of people who sort of swing to the other extreme and don't take God seriously enough. During a foray into one of the mainline denominations for example, it seemed like a lot of people in our church just saw God like an indulgent parent smiling benignly and patting us all on the head. As one of them said: "I go to church to feel good and to be told I'm ok. I don't want to ever hear a sermon that makes me feel bad."
Isn't walking with God full of such seeming paradoxes? Holy fear (Isaiah falling down before the throne, the imagery of Revelation etc.) yet a God who reveals himself in Jesus and wants us to think of him as our loving Abba/Daddy.
God is Holy
ReplyDeleteIsaiah 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
God is on my side
ReplyDeleteGod is strength and energy when i have none
God is in the suburbs, the city, the slums, and the places i've never been and never heard of
God is joy
God is holding each of our lives in His hand
God is bigger than any box we try to put Him into!
ReplyDeleteGod is amazing
God is probably chuckling and shaking His head over this one. "the seriousness of God? Really? What, that whole flood thing wasn't serious enough for you?"(grin)
ReplyDeleteGod is nicer to me than I am.
ReplyDeleteGod is keeping me from getting fired at my job.
God is the patience I need to make it through rush hour traffic and my daughter's teething.
God is reminding my family to be responsible and get out of debt.
God is putting food on my table.
God is delighted when I delight myself in Him.
God is more than capable and more than willing to save my parents.
God is always giving me way more good things and way less bad things than I deserve.
God is using these comments to help me remember to praise Him.
ReplyDeleteGod is showing me that people I've never met can encourage me when they share what He is doing in and around them.
God is the ultimate awesome!
God is hugging me right now.
God is the creator of our intelligence
ReplyDeleteGod is too complex, it is futile to try to understand him
God is simple so everyone can know him
God is patient with us in our limited grasp of how broken we really are...
ReplyDeleteGod is patient with us in our limited grasp of how great he really is...
God is the only one who can reach people's hearts, though we as humans try to do it for Him.
ReplyDeleteGod is the one who provides protection and strength when we are in the fiery furnace.
God is infinitely perfect, and works all things together for His good.
God is a comedian. Look at the platypus.
ReplyDelete(So many "serious" comments here!)
Your kids will have a hard time seeing God as serious. Their kids will have a hard time seeing God as joyful. And so on, and so on...
ReplyDeleteGod is bigger than the Boogie Man
ReplyDeleteHe's bigger than Godzilla or the monster on TV -- OK, seriously God is beyond what my mind can even begin to comprehend.
God is the one sitting next to me on the quiet couch at night, when I feel totally left behind, grappling with how wrong I am or was, certain I have nothing to offer the world much less an individual.
ReplyDeleteGod is the one who wraps His arms around me at that time, and reminds me that He loves me and forgives me.
God is so much more than I am willing to give Him credit for.
ReplyDeleteGod is concerned and interested in every aspect of my life. God created all things, so there are no things too small for Him. (Everyone always remembers there is nothing too big for Him, but sometimes forget that there is also nothing too small)
ReplyDeleteGod is jealous, and He is patient. (Thank You Lord for being patient!)
God is invested in our happiness so much that he shows us all of the things that will make us miserable and then tells us to stay away from them.
God is so amazing that the mysteries and gray areas of righteous living are different for all of us, and He gave us His Holy Spirit to help us decipher what is what.
For some of us, frisbee is a sin, for others - the most awesome sport of all time :)
And the one that has gotten me through so many rough days -
God is Eternal.
2Corinthians 4:17-18
For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Thank you John. Thank you for opening up and letting God pour out on each of us this morning.
Through a long time of lament, confusion and questions, I could build my life on this:
ReplyDeleteGod is still in control
God is still good
God still loves me more than I could ever imagine.
God is consistent.
ReplyDeleteGod is surprising.
God is creative.
God is imaginative.
God is overwhelming at times.
God is in the miracle business.
God is gracious.
God is merciful.
God is NOT political! :)
God is.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we could do a God has...
...God has a sense of humor
...God has grace that is so big and deep and mysterious and awesome that I cannot describe it
God is.
ReplyDeleteI think that about sums it up for me.
and just for jollies...
ReplyDeleteGod is - Bigger than the booooogeyman.
:-D
God is EVERLASTING
ReplyDeleteGod is greedy
God is my EVRYTHING
haha a sandwich.
God will never let me go.
ReplyDeleteAfter sitting in a couple recent Bible studies and going through some interesting experiences, I have come to the conclusion that...
ReplyDelete--God is really really smart.
--God is way too forgiving, but I'm not going to argue with Him about it...don't fix what ain't broke, as they say. =)
--God is funny.
God is able to speak all languages.
ReplyDeleteGod is reckless.
Wow. So many great comments!
ReplyDeleteGod is in control, even when my life feels out of control.
God is my Daddy God. Serious, loving, fun, compassionate... Everything I need, even when I don't know what I need.
God is into second, third, fourth, etc. chances.
ReplyDeleteFor me, I'm not sure that God is more love than wrath. I just need to try to remember that he is both.
God is bigger than our denominations and political parties.
ReplyDeleteGod is not a Republican or a Democrat.
God is not Pentecostal or Catholic.
one has only to read any part of Leviticus or Numbers to see how serious God is.
ReplyDeletei was having a conversation with a friend recently about how it seems that only studying the new testament paints a one-sided image of what God is like. which is why i believe teaching only application-based lessons are dangerous because history has a lot of great scary lessons to be learned.
PJ, thanks for this assignment. I will be in divorce court in less than two weeks trying to save my marriage and my house is in jeopardy of four closure. I know that God has a plan for me but sometimes I need to be forced to remember. Thanks for forcing me.
ReplyDeleteOk, I couldn't get past the fourth post without crying.
ReplyDeleteGod is God all by himself.
God is not fear
ReplyDeleteGod is not a muslim
God is not terrible
ReplyDeleteGod is a mysterious circle.
ReplyDeleteHumans tend to see linear continuums in which seriousness is at one extreme and joyfulness is at the other. Or, love (for us) and hate (of sin) are at opposite ends of the spectrum. God is where seriousness and joy flow into each other and co-mingle in harmony. Go is where love and hate converge to formulate that all encompassing holy love – of which we now may only experience a small fraction. Being near the perimeter of the circle, what we see is a faint preview of God’s nature - those glimpses point to a vast mystery far beyond our expectations. Full revelation comes when God welcomes us into the circle. (Or so I hope).
God is good. All the time. All the time. God is good.
ReplyDeleteGod is indescribable and undefinable.
ReplyDeleteGod is DA BOMB!
ReplyDeleteGod is all that and a bag of chips.
God is what's up.
God is the man!
God is funny. We are made in His image, and as hard as we try to be funny, God must do it infinitely better than any of us. I think our sides will constantly ache when we're in heaven, and our eyes won't be able to stay dry for laughter.
ReplyDeleteGod is the hand that holds that world.
ReplyDeleteGod holds my hand.
God is everything I will ever need.
God is.
God is supremely happy with Himself.
ReplyDeleteGod is beautifully jealous.
God is frustratingly patient.
God is much less critical and much more accepting of me than I am of myself.
ReplyDeleteGod likes to eat dessert first too...at least on occasion I'm guessing. (what I'm trying to say is that we have more in common than I once believed.)
God is listening even when I'm ignoring him.
God really does want me to be happy, like singing in the shower, dancing in the street for no good reason kind of happy.
God is funny. God is ironic. God is painful but worth it. God is... everything.
ReplyDeleteI, too, struggle with thinking God is so serious all the time. I have a very hard time believing God is loving and funny. But, that's the best part of God, I think.
Also, a note about the comment that children's programs are watering down God and are not serious enough...
I teach in the preschool at my church and we teach the kids the same big truths that the adult church is learning. Right now, we are teaching them about parables and faith... very abstract concepts for kids, but they seem to get it enough. Not all children's programs water down who God is.
God is incomprehensible - Im glad i serve a God who does things I don't understand. As much as I wish I could figure Him out. I am glad I can't.
ReplyDeleteGod is listening when I'm not; loving when I'm unable; and with me ALL the time.
ReplyDeleteGod is THE BEST!
Haha. This is like writing a facebook status for God.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Elijah would have written, "God is not taking a nap or on the toilet, like YOUR god, Baal."
Wonder what he's currently up to...
God is reality.
ReplyDeleteGod is beyond.
God is mind-blowing.
God is my Father.
God is just plain cool!
ReplyDeleteGod is mysterious!
God is funny, He has a great sense of humor!
God is ALWAYS faithful.
ReplyDeleteGod is patient enough to show me just how faithful He is, over and over and over again. Even when I doubt Him..over and over and over again.
God is so much bigger than I could ever describe.
The first time I read through The Chronicles of Narnia, I had a hard time believing God was tender and loving, but still strong and powerful, like Lewis portrayed Aslan to be. Seeing God as anything other than a being who orchestrates the world (rather than a God who cares about every aspect of our life) is still hard. But I still work to remember that:
ReplyDeleteGod is better, mightier and more loving than Aslan.
WOW!! "God is God all by himself." I ABSOLUTELY love that! I don't know why... it really just touched my heart.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, mine won't be as good:
God is here. And He will never leave me.
God is limitless. << been realizing this lately in a major way...
God is love. God is compassion.
God is funny. He has a sense of humor and laughs when I do something silly. God is also fun.
God is awesome.
God is happy when I smile, and He cries with me when I'm upset.
God is more understanding, more forgiving, and more loving than I will EVER be able to comprehend.
God is big enough for my troubles and small enough for my worries.
God is always waiting and watching for me to return home when I go astray.
God is everything.
Hah. I just listened to that song.. I liked it. It has a nice perspective... we all have different interpretations of God. Nice post. :]
Oh yeah.. God is using SCL in mighty ways, almost like therapy for me =P
Thank you.
God is my Savior
ReplyDeleteGod is my friend
God gives me gifts - I choose to see them or not, I choose to give him the glory or not
God whispers crazy things in my ear - when I do them he is glorified and I am always in awe
God gives me rules as a father to keep me safe, because he loves me
God is just
God wants to be glorified...
Thank you Jon and everyone who glorified God today
God is my best friend
ReplyDeleteGod is not ignoring me... but it feels like it anyway.
ReplyDeleteGod is passionate.
ReplyDeleteGod is ...
ReplyDeletechill.
somehow he manages to keep the whole world in His hands AND simultaneously manages NOT to be a control freak. He's got all the time in the world, & He never forces anyone into anything.
ridiculously loving.
seriously. does this one need any explanation? i thank God for his lavish, illogical, & totally unmerited love, grace, mercy, & favor.
worth it.
i know there are folks who are convinced i'm crazy for being a follower of christ. i think there may be people in my church who think i'm quite possibly a freak for the exuberant way i worship.
but i don't care. there are times i think they all might be right, but really ... i don't care.
and for a person who's a recovering obsessive people-pleaser bent on making sure everyone likes her, that's saying something.
not limited by my categories, boxes, definitions, or understanding
hallelujah.
way more on top of it than i give him credit for.
sometimes i lash out at him while i'm feeling tired or vulnerable or forgotten or if i feel like i've been suffering too long without any sign of relief on the horizon.
i don't get how it all works, but somehow, even this is loving. he's present, he knows my heart, & i believe His heart hurts with me too.
i don't get it, but i believe it.
here.
closer than the air around me. i think amy grant said it first, but it's true. whether or not we can sense it:
HE. IS. HERE. NOW.
and i love that.
God is love.
ReplyDeleteGod is all powerful.
God is all knowing.
God is just.
God is the Great Creator who delights in all of creation.
How this plays out is the beauty and mystery of faith.
To me, God is this huge, cosmic, creative, powerful force. God has armies of angels. God sits on the throne in judgment. God should be feared.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of the love, the mercy, the compassion... I think Jesus. In my little mind, God sits up there ready to destroy mankind for its wickedness... But God doesn't cuz of Jesus.
God is faithful. He never lets go even when we try to get away.
ReplyDeleteGod is all I need.
ReplyDeleteI stole this from someone else who posted here...please don't hate me, it really just said exactly what I wanted to. Plus I added to it:
ReplyDeleteGod is my Father. I was blessed to have a great earthly dad who had a joke for every occasion (and that probably includes funerals if I rack my brain hard enough), and yet could be very serious about things that were important. He also had a temper. If anyone hurt someone in his family, God help them. He played checkers with me, took me to amusement parks, talked about God and politics. He was joyful, and serious. I always wanted to please him, which wasn't hard, because he loved me, and yet sometimes was hard, because he loved me, you know what I mean?
God is all that, a thousand fold.
God is my Daddy. I am 20, and I lost my father when I was 15. I accepted Christ when I was 16. Does anyone else remember when something terrible had happened, and you thought your world was about to end? Where did you run? If your like me it was probably to your dad. He would wrap me in his arms and let me sob into his shoulder for as long as I needed to.
I still have those days. God is my daddy. When I need my Daddy Hug, I can run to Him, and he wraps me into His arms for as long as I need to be there. He reminds me who He is, and lets me know that with Him everything will work out the way it is supposed to.
Thanks for this post Jon.
God is not a tame lion.
ReplyDeleteGod is good.
God is with me in limbo, when I don't know where to go or whether my prayer will be met with a desired answer, God is with me.
God is truth.
God is comfortable.
ReplyDeleteGod is consistent.
God is appreciative of my sarcasm.
God is certain that Batman is way better than Superman.
God is buff.

ReplyDeleteGod is judge of the world.

ReplyDeleteGod is a jokester
ReplyDeleteGod is powerfully gentle
God is welcoming me back home. Smiling and laughing with open arms as I run to him. And holding me when I cry, and laughing with me when I laugh. :)
ReplyDeleteGod is beyond my ability to comprehend . . . and yet wants to be known by me.
ReplyDeleteGod is stronger, wiser, and more loving and forgiving than i could ever imagine or hope.
God is pretty funny, actually.
God is GREAT at loving me.
God is the source of my joy, my hope, my strength, and my rest.
God is not on your side; he's between your ears. ;-)
ReplyDeleteGod is not a psychological focalization of spiritual meanings, neither is he "the noblest work of man."
God is never wrathful, vengeful, or angry. It is true that wisdom does often restrain his love, while justice conditions his rejected mercy. His love of righteousness cannot help being exhibited as equal hatred for sin. The Father is not an inconsistent personality; the divine unity is perfect.
God is changeless.
God is love.
God is absolute truth.
God is spirit.
God is energy.
God is a relative revelation of truth which is ever adaptable to the constantly evolving universe.
God is the Father of all personalities in the universe of universes.
God alone is spirit sovereign.
God is the only stationary, self-contained, and changeless being in the whole universe, having no outside, no beyond, no past, and no future. God is purposive energy (creative spirit) and absolute will, and these are self-existent and universal.
God is the being of absolute self-determination; there are not limits to his universe reactions save those which are self-imposed, and his freewill acts are conditioned only by those divine qualities and perfect attributes which inherently characterize his eternal nature.
God is the personality of love from whom the human concepts of truth, beauty, and goodness are derived.
God is limited by the evolutionary presence of the Supreme, conditioned by the eventuating presence of the Ultimate, and coordinated by the three existential Absolutes-- Deity, Universal, and Unqualified. And God's presence is thus limited because such is the will of God.
God, is prepersonal and superpersonal in ways not altogether comprehensible by man.
God is absolute in the spiritual administration of the cosmos in the person of the Eternal Son.
God is infinitely more than reality idealized or the universe personalized.
God is the primal cause of the universal physical phenomena of all space.
God is divinely kind to sinners. "Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God."
God is the Lord of life and the Comforter of all men; he is the lover of mankind and the helper of those who are distressed. He is our life giver and the Good Shepherd of the human flocks. God is our father, brother, and friend. And we long to know this God in our inner being.
God is a transcendent reality, not merely man's traditional concept of
supreme values.
God is a saving person and a loving Father to all who enjoy spiritual peace on earth, and who crave to experience personality survival in death.
God is constant, concrete, he never changes.

ReplyDeleteBeen listening to a Cat Stevens song by Liz Durrett called "How can I tell you." Even though it may have been written as a love song, I always seem to turn it back to God and the travels I experienced being a former prodigal.
I need to know you,
need to feel my arms around you
like a sea around a shore
And each night and day I pray,
in hope
That I might find you,
in hope that I might find you, because hearts can do no more
It always ends up to one thing honey(father),
still I kneel upon the floor
How can I tell you that I love you, I love you
But I cant think of right words to say
God is unfathomable, and that's okay.
ReplyDeleteGod is everywhere, even when you wish he wasn't sometimes, but you're glad that He is. (Psalm 139)
God knows more than me about me.

ReplyDeleteGod is absolutely hilarious.
God is my only certainty.
Thank you for this post. We should do this at least once a month if not once a week. It makes me go "mmm" in a good way.
ReplyDeleteGod is the Source of my love for other people. And no matter how hard I try, I can never love them more than He does. But that's alright.
God is love and there is no fear in love. This means whenever I am afraid, He can help me out.
I love when God is described in the Bible as sheltering us under His wings. I feel really safe there.
Also, Ted Dekker described God as a boy who liked to turn the world upside down every once in awhile. Because He could. Think about it, God could totally be like "Gravity? Hmm...not today" and we'd all float.
As to being serious, I think church is kind of serious because it kinds of frowns upon talking but most of the time I am talking about what's going on. But I don't think God necessarily is.
God wants me to tell Him these things.
And finally, God is thinking I should probably go to bed right now. :-)
Love today's entry and all the previous comments. All true.

God is Holy.
ReplyDeleteGod is above our tiny ability to think and reason.
ReplyDeleteGod has a plan that not even I can mess with (thank you LORD)
ReplyDeleteWhat an AWESOME post! You know, before I found my church home, Church of the Highlands, I saw God as being completely intimidating and waiting for me to mess up so that he could strike me down with discipline. I, like you, had a hard time imagining Him laughing with me, loving on me, looking down on me with grace and mercy. Then, I found my awesome church and had kids. God has shown me SO much through my church and through my boys. So I say...
ReplyDeleteGod is in love with me. No matter what I do, He still loves me.
God is slow to anger and quick to forgive.
God wants what is best for me. It may not necessarily be the way I have it planned out, but He always knows what's best.
God cares about EVERY tiny area of my life and has shown me as much.
God is patient.
God has a sense of humor.
God wants my heart, not my empty hollow words.
God is my Abba Father...my daddy.
I think the point of thinking God is serious or humorous is really more of a reflection of our own personality, mood, life experience and/or biases. In a sense that is putting God is a box that feels comfortable to us. Is that idolatry or our personal limitations? Someone smarter than me needs to figure that out.
ReplyDeleteI've been walking with Jesus for over 31 years, so the God is question has been bringing back so many memories. Throughout the day, I've been returning to the God is ... question. To be honest, every adjective has seemed trite and inadequate. But, here's my feeble try.
He's higher than poetry
He's greater than art
He's purer than light
He can merely speak, "Let there be" and create a universe so intricate and marvelous that our brightest scientific minds will never fully comprehend or define it.
He is bigger than the entire universe, is adored by heavenly host far more powerful and lovely, and yet, if I were the only sinner in all the universe, He would die for me.
He is so holy that He deserves a symphony of all created things from stars to seraphs, and yet, He still cares about the pitiful strains of one boy's song and weeps as though it were a masterpiece.
God is simple
ReplyDeleteGod is aware
God is open
God is with me
God is fun.
ReplyDeleteGod is freakin' hilarious.
God is witty beyond compare.
God is tender.
God is mischievously winking at me most of the time.
God is saying, "Go get her, boy!"
God is knowable.
ReplyDeleteWhen we did a camp on "God is..." a coupla years ago, this was one I didn't expect to hear at all - but when we considered it, how extraordinary that He has deigned to let us know Him at all! To compare, I wouldn't introduce myself to an ant (what a waste of time) but God loves us so much that He reveals himself to us!
God is enough.
ReplyDeleteGod is beyond.
God is still.
God is until.
God is.

Jon, I loved this post. Thank you so much for sharing. Like you, I get the seriousness of God; it's the other side of Him I struggle with understanding and fully embracing.
ReplyDeleteGod is more in love with me than I could possibly imagine. He is SO into me!
God is patiently waiting for me to really figure out that the above statement really is true.
God is AWESOME (I read somewhere once that this word really only describes God best; when used anywhere else to describe anyone else really gives them more credit than they deserve)
God is that happy feeling that just happens and you wonder where did that come from? You can stop wondering now!
ReplyDeleteGod is pretty crazy for letting me be a part of it all.
ReplyDelete"In the last few years, He has been showing me that He is more flowers than thistles more laughter than wrath, more open hand than closed fist."
ReplyDeleteDude, THAT is writing! God has given you a gift and it's encouraging to see you using it..
God is patient.
ReplyDelete- He waits for my rat-like mind to puzzle it out and finally come back to Him.
God is patient.
- He watches my silly antics and I imagine Him closing His eyes, shaking His head, saying, "I'm truly amazed she doesn't walk into walls."
God is patient.
- When I stumble and fall(more like do a double, half-gainer into the deep end of sin), He waits for me to climb out. When I comment on how stupid that was...."That sucked." He answers, "Really? You think?"
Most of all. He gets me. And that says a lot.
I just read this, and I just learned something new about God today, so I wanted to post it even though no one is going to read it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm sad, God is not in heaven saying, "Suck it up!" God is not impatiently waiting for me to get over it already. God is sad with me, even when he knows things have to be this way.
