There are a few concrete rules when it comes to popular music. Such as, if you make a sad love song, it has to be raining in the video or you have to be singing it while knee deep in a foamy, sunset-drenched ocean. You include Bobby Brown in your reunion tour at your own peril. And my favorite of all, Christian music and country music are cultural cousins. For some reason, these two genres are closely related. Rascal Flatts does the song "Broken Road" and Selah remakes it for Christian radio. Carrie Underwood makes the song "Jesus take the wheel" which does well on both Christian and country stations. And those are just the two most recent overlaps. People like Garth Brooks have been doing God-type songs like "Unanswered prayers" for a while. It seems that since the dawn of time, we've traded musicians and music. I think it's because we both call Nashville home.
I can't identify the exact reason why these two genres are so interlinked, but I will predict something - Jessica Simpson might be coming back to Christian music.
Back? What's that you say, "back?" That's right, when she first came out, she was loosely billed as the "Christian Britney Spears." Her dad is a youth minister and I think that sometimes the rest of the United States just assumes that everyone from Texas is a Christian. Her first recordings were for a gospel album, she was signed to a Christian record label called "Proclaim Records" which folded and she played at shows with Kirk Franklin. I definitely remember people telling me, "Yay, we got our own girl pop singer!"
Granted, this label didn't last long but I think she might be headed back here. Rarely does someone start really big in secular pop music and then become a Christian recording artist. Usually you start off Christian, sell enough albums to graduate to country or pop and then never look back unless your career hiccups. But all of this begs the bigger question, should we take Jessica Simpson back?
I approached this question like a mad scientist with a plus and minus scorecard. Here's what I came up with:
1. Ashlee and the bass player from Fall Out Boy
This isn't a guarantee, but there's a chance that if we take Jessica back, the Simpson family will throw in sister Ashlee and her husband Pete Wentz as a bonus. Something to think about. Let's call this one a "plus."
2. Jessica is dating a Dallas Cowboy
If you're a Cowboy fan, this is an automatic "plus." If you are the rest of the country, not so much. I think Tony Romo seems like a decent guy and I like his garlic bread and fried pasta appetizer. What, that's "Tony Roma's" restaurant chain not Tony Romo's? This is so embarrassing. I'm calling this one "even" because everyone knows that God's favorite team is the Patriots. (There's a post, "rooting for God's favorite sports team.")
3. For a star, Simpson has a pretty tame life.
She's never gotten a DUI, been arrested, left the house without all her clothes on or had random babies with random dudes. I'm not saying I'm happy that we live in a world where we should congratulate people for remembering underwear, but I am saying my daughters are going to a mountaintop convent when they get older. I call her tame living a "plus."
4. The "tuna incident."
On her MTV show she apparently confused tuna with chicken because the tuna brand called itself the "chicken of the sea." You would think that would be a minus, but she actually ended up spinning it into a tuna sponsorship and made the whole thing seem like a deliberate move. I think she is smarter than she appears. "Plus."
5. The Pizza Hut commercial.
We overlooked the tuna incident but that Pizza Hut commercial where she acts like Buffalo have wings is unforgivable. That's a big "minus." In other pizza-related humor, I recently saw a short comedy clip titled, "Domino's Test Limits of What Humans Will Eat." Best line of the whole piece was "Dr. Moore said he initially had moral issues with conducting the tests on humans but has since come to see the subjects as quote 'cheese and sauce consuming beasts.'" Brilliant.
6. Her dad is a youth minister from Texas.
I know Joe Simpson recently did his daughter Ashlee's wedding and is a youth minister from Texas. But I think roughly 44% of the dudes I know in Texas are youth ministers. There are just a ton of churches in Texas, which by the way is a state I do not mess with. Let's be upfront about that. And he's also allegedly said some fairly questionable things about Jessica in the past. "Minus"
7. She got a divorce.
I have some really great, deeply Christian friends that have gone through divorce so I can by no means call this one a minus. Let's call it "even." (Weird, point number 7 was surprisingly serious, don't worry, 8 is ridiculous.)
8. She is attractive.
That sounds shallow of me, but here's what one of the ministers on our superhero guide to famous pastors has to say on the topic of ugliness, "Who would want to get in on something where you’re miserable, poor, broke and ugly and you just have to muddle through until you get to heaven?" Indeed, studies have shown God prefers hott people 2 to 1. (Note the extra "t" for emphasis. Oh no he didn't! Oh yes I did!) "Plus."
9. She dated John Mayer
That doesn't necessarily make her unique, but remember, Christianity is quietly trying to steal John Mayer. I mean the Jehovah's Witnesses got Prince and Scientology got Beck, why can't we have Mayer? And he may or may not have written the Message version of the Bible, so that's a "plus."
Well, with five pluses, it looks like we'll be accepting Jessica Simpson back into the WWJD-bedazzled arms of Christian music. I personally think she should do a remake of "Our God is an Awesome God" and play it live at the bench press contest I am trying to put together with Joel Osteen. Just a suggestion.
I'm not too sure about this. Hard to take someone back who was never really there. Plus there is enough random ammunition leveled at the "Christian Ghetto" without giving a silver bullet like this. Also I read she got booed like crazy at her first country show in Michigan. . . there's the problem, country in Michigan. . .she thought it was Mississippi.

*Clean? ~Latest Buzz is she has an Italian Loaf (bun) in the oven...How "clean is clean" if the "Xian" Cheerleader is "Sleeping w/ the QB" and having his baby???
~Careful w/ our adjectives...
[Holy-set apart, Pure-clean]
*Certainly not our Little Mrs. Romo ?
However, God will always "take us back".
~Even "disillusioned-pop-star-former-xians" aka: Madonna, Britney, Prince, and even Jessica Simpson.

ReplyDeleteGreat point. I changed it to "tame" which I think is what I was trying to say. You are right, clean is not the word or idea I was trying to get across in that part. thanks for the feedback
Jon
well as she's doing country music (http://www.sonybmg.com.au/news/details.do?newsId=20030829005718) you never know what could happen.
ReplyDeleteOn totally another topic, here's an article about another things christians like http://www.thinkchristian.net/index.php/2008/07/23/is-all-this-christian-sex-talk-a-good-idea/
Don't forget, Kabbalah got Madonna, and Madonna got A-Rod.
ReplyDeleteCan we get The Rock? Please? And not the Apostle Peter, I mean the wrestler turned actor. Maybe since he sang Elvis stuff in The Gameplan we could call him a singer?
Okay?
If the boys get Jessica , the girls might need Mr Rock.
1. Whenever I saw the words "Pizza Hut Commercial," I thought you were talking about the one shortly after Dukes of Hazzard came out, where she was dressed in an incredibly revealing outfit and acting kind of like a saloon whore. I'd go with minus on that one (and on her as Daisy Duke in general).
ReplyDelete2. When I saw "She's gotten a divorce," I totally thought you were going the Amy Grant route, and all I could think of was Lust Control's song, "Leave Amy Grant Alone." (If you have not heard Lust Control, you must try to find an album on ebay immediately. They are hilarious and holy.)
3. If you are a Patriots fan, I am not sure we can be friends. Tom Brady is a jerk, and his line can't seem to stop the other team (pick any team) from sacking him. GO PACKERS!
I think that, technically, Beck is a non-practicing scientologist (note the middle finger of grammar). I don't think they should get to claim him just because his parents are scientologists.
ReplyDeleteI have it on good authority that Jessica Simpson is the thrid cousin, twice removed, of Homer Simpson. "Plus."
ReplyDeleteDoh!
And what's this buzz talk about Jessica? I thought I was reading Stuff Christians Like, not US Weekly. Silly, silly me.
Let's not forget that Ashlee Simpson was a regular on God's favorite TV show -- 7th Heaven!! The Simpson family is so back "in".
ReplyDeletePhilip -
ReplyDeleteHere's an excerpt from an interview Beck did with The Guardian in 2006:
He will admit to being a Scientologist, although in the past he has been reluctant to talk about it. Today, he insists he's always happy to discuss it. "I think journalists are more uncomfortable [with it]," he says, "but I'm fine." While he doesn't come across as particularly knowledgeable or passionate on the subject, he explains that Scientology is "something that you can draw on. It's helpful." I ask him why Scientology is surrounded by so much mystery. "I think that's in the media," he says. "It's very open and the actuality of it is quite different." So it's a positive thing? "Oh yeah, absolutely. Doors are open. People go and have lunch."
I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I can forget the Dukes of Hazzard Movie. I can forgive, but forget? I think God's the only one who can do that!
ReplyDelete;) ;) That movie was horrible in so many ways.
Your post made me immediately think of that song the Los Lonely Boys did called "Heaven" (or was it "How Far is Heaven?"). It was a hit on mainstream radio, and then Salvador covered it and suddenly it was a hit on Christian radio too.
ReplyDeleteI can't tell you how much this irked me. Basically it was Christian radio saying, "Look, the only two criteria you need to meet is that you sing a spiritual sounding song and you are signed to a Christian label. Los Lonely Boys only met one of these, which is why we would only play this song when a Christian band sang it."
of course, these rules are amended if you are hott like Carrie Underwood.
I have pretty much given up on "Christian" music. If Jessica Simpson starts making "Christian" music, then I'm done with it for good.
ReplyDelete(Yes, I put Christian in quotes, because defining what is and is not Christian music is a whole other topic.)
Jon, you are ridiculous as always and I agree with Elizabeth that the Simpson family is uber creepy, especially that interview with her dad about her photo shoot with Maxim. Um, ew!
ReplyDeleteOHH noooo.... I am a DIE hard Cowboys fan and no - it is NOT a plus that she's dating our Quarterback. So that's a DEFINITE minus. And I must say, Jon. The Patriots? Are you high? Everyone knows God's favorite team is America's team... and what team would that be? Oh yeah, that's right - the COWBOYS! ha ha
ReplyDeleteAnd I must point out the irony here: you give her a minues because her dad's in the ministry, but a plus because she's hott. Good times... good times...
This is a seriously scary thought. I still can't believe she dated John Mayer...
ReplyDeleteNo, I can't take her back, because I was never a fan. Have you seen the girl sing live? Terrible! She should stick to making shoes and perfume.
ReplyDeleteFried pasta?!?
ReplyDeleteI agree that the Dukes of Hazzard commercial (one was for Direct TV too) had to be a minus. And giving a minus for her dad being a youth minister?! Followed up with a plus for her being attractive?!
ReplyDeleteI'd welcome anyone to the Christian music 'scene' that seemed to really have a heart for Jesus and wanted to communicate that. There is some really awful Christian music out there (in my opinion) that I don't have a problem with because a) the artist is trying to further the Kingdom, and b) it might speak to someone (even though it ain't speakin' to me)...
Dude you are too funny. We need a NFL Quarterback in the fold, let her in.
ReplyDeleteJon,
ReplyDeleteYou regularly amaze me...and this post is no exception.
I've actually "LEARNED" something about Jessica Simpson--of whom I have never been a fan.
Maybe I'll look at her with more grace from now.
I read your blog EVERY DAY...by the way.
I don't care if she is pretty, smart, and remembers to wear her underwear etc, if she wants to be billed as a christian singer I care about whether or not she is a christian. And while its not up to me to judge people's hearts she does not make the choices you would hope a christian to make. Don't even get me started on her dad, that man should be ashamed of himself. I am not going to be happy with her as a role model for my kids because she acts "better" than some others. Sin is sin, and regardless of whether or not she sings country christian or death metal, she is not a good role model for my daughter.
ReplyDeleteWhile it's nice of you to consider taking Jessica back, you're a better person than I am. She is a terrible singer, a worse actress and really, just kind of irritating.
ReplyDeleteIf you think I'm being too hard on her...go watch "The Dukes of Hazard" or "Newlyweds" - miserable. Just miserable...
take her back as soon as possible! i mean, if she wants to come back, then obviously that is like repenting of her leaving in the first place. forgiven. that's how we do.
ReplyDeleteoh, and i'm pretty sure linkin park's song "what i've done" has played on christian radio where i live. i mean, it is a great song grounded on truth... but linkin park? seriously?
God always takes us back, so I guess we gotta take Jessica back and I'll do so with open arms :)
ReplyDeleteBUT--as a country music fan, I'm put off that she is moving to country music since her pop career is non existent these days. Country music fans are big on loyalty and she didn't show us love until her career was swirling down the potty so she has her work cut out for her...
Love this, but dude -
ReplyDelete"because everyone knows that God's favorite team is the Patriots. "
Beg to differ. After the miracle that was last year's Super Bowl win by the NYGiants, I'd have to say that the NYG are the Fav team there. After all, good always conquers evil in the end. *S*
If she wants to come back, we should, like Christ, take her back.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't think she wants to come back.
And everybody who calls themselves a youth minister isn't really a youth minister ... at least for Jesus that is, and I'ma leave it at that. Check out the fruit, PJ. Check out the fruit. (Luke 6:44)
I'm all for TBN doing a reality show with Britney and Jessica called Samaritan Woman (sung to the tune of American Woman). It can be like The Sinful Life .. uh, The Simple Life, but holy.
ReplyDeleteIt starts with the head. Someone needs to save Joe Simpson first.
ReplyDeleteIf we're going to talk about Jessica Simpson returning to Christian music, can we please talk about the fact that Heidi Montag from "The Hills" wants to make a Christian album too? I think these girls need to stay where they are better acquainted. MTV.
ReplyDeletei think this post marks a scl comeback of sorts.
ReplyDeletei love jessica simpson. i once was in an argument over who was better right around the time britney made the oops i did it again video (the hight of her supposed hotness). i vigerously defended jessica simpson.
also i hear a lot of judgy judgersons in the crowd today.
ReplyDelete"honey we don't do arts and crafts, we judge" - a gay friend of mine (and yes I have some of those) quoting some other gay guy.
i'm still so confused on this john mayer thing. i know he co-wrote the message version of the bible, but i can't get out of my mind that i heard he interviewed on jay leno or the daily show once and was ewwwie gross when talking about women he's slept with or wants to sleep with. i think he was all into jessica love hewitt (am i getting her name right?) at the time. can anyone vouch for this or set me straight? i love the man's music, and i'd love to be rooting him into the fold, but for now i just can't get past the eewwie sex fiend image of him in my mind. which, by the way, might change our vote on the jessica simpson / john mayer hook-up to a "minus."
ReplyDelete.....have you seen Dukes of Hazard? I hope not. My parents rented it unfortunately and it was "unrated"....that usually means bad things. It was the most non-Christian thing I've ever seen. Not to say God won't forgive her for that if she chooses to repent and such, that's fine and cool. Really I'd appreciate it if she turned to Christ, that'd be cool. But the truth is.I HATE her singing voice. She doesn't breathe correctly and it just seems like nails on a chalkboard amplified 10 million times.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I recognize that divorced people can return to God and repent, but I dont' think that should count as an "even" just because of that. God is obvious about his stance on divorce, He hates it, just as He hates it when we seperate ourselves from Him and try to "divorce" Him. Marriage is a picture of His love for us and divorce should not be part of the picture. It's a minus against her, until repentance, and because I don't know her, I can't say.....but I don't appreciate another Christian in the spotlight giving up on marriage, if she is in fact Christian.
It makes nothing about the Christian life appealing. If there is nothing different about us or appealing in the way we live out our lives in relationships and things, how can we hope to attract others to God?
She's not a role model I would hope to place in front of my children in the future.
Also, she just plain needs vocal training. Lots of it. Christian music is already boring and corny. Do we need another bad musician? No.
Instead of playing country, I really feel that our radio stations should play goodness from people who are great like Sufjan Stevens! He's got some great pieces such as "to be alone with you". It actually sounds good, and points you to God. Plus plus plus!
If you put up a pole between Jessica/Sufjan, Sufjan would win hands down. I guarantee.
If God loves the Giants, please explain what happened to Goliath. A loving God wouldn't let Big G go down like that.
ReplyDeleteBesides all football is hellish ... except for flag football. God is gentle.
You call it judging.
ReplyDeleteWe call it holding people accountable.
Christ does it. So should we.
Like the Sarah said, you got the Dallas Cowboy points reversed.
ReplyDeleteBIG HUGE MINUS because she is dating Tony Romo. Since they have started dating, the Cowboys have won zero (0) playoff games. Zero.
If they keep dating, then they are guarantee to keep not winning playoff games.
Ugh.
Since the rest of the country loathes the Cowboys, this would be a HUGE PLUS for all of you guys.
I am not quite sure who this jessica girl is but she is pretty cute, but that is not the point, the point is WHAT YOU ARE HAVING A BENCH PRESS CONTEST WITH JOEL OLSTEEN? you should totally put it on like paper view so we can watch it in Hawaii. That guy is kinda scrawny but I hear he benches like a million pounds but I totally think you could take him, PKs (is that the PC term for pastor's kids) are like the toughest kids I know they used to beat me up all the time at church.
ReplyDeleteI'd seriously love to see Simpson completely devote her life for Christ and become our country's version of Darlene Zschech. The impact would be huge.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet all this love for Jessica is warming the cockels of her heart right now. Nothin' brings 'em back to Jesus like a good old fashioned slapfestt. (Note the extra "t" for emphasis. Jon did it and so did I.)
ReplyDeleteI think the real reason women don't like her has a teeny weeny bit to do with oh,...what's the word...somehow "jealousy" comes to mind. (No she didn't! You bet your Daisy Dukes I did!!)
allison leigh - We can't take Sufjan Stevens back because he just plain is a Christian artist (one of the very few good ones). He never left; he was never anything else, to my knowledge. Also, no offense, but were you one of the people who boycotted Amy Grant in the 90s?
ReplyDeleteIt would be great if Jess (I know her like that ... in my head) came back, brought Nick with her and they became great examples of covenant marriage.
ReplyDeleteanon 10:24 AM (i think the clock is messed up, no?)
ReplyDeleteChrist did a lot of things and when we all get a handle on loving our neighbors then you can talk to me about the "we" who should be holding Jessican Simpson "accountable".
disclaimer: just my $.02, (which will be tithed and no spent on an unrated dvd of dukes of hazard.)
miss hannah- I never said we needed to take Sufjan back. lol. I know he never left, but I'm just saying we ignore his good music and give the limelight to horrible musicians who sound like 3 yr. olds on helium.
ReplyDeleteI never banned Amy Grant. I don't particularly love her style either, though she, unlike Simpson, has actual vocal skill. I'm not a fan of hers but never was. I honestly don't know much about her personal life other than she divorced and I've heard various rumors. I don't applaud her for that at all. None of us should. I don't disown her (whatever that means) and wish her the best possible relationship with the Lord. But it's wrong to pretend that what these people are doing isn't provoked by satan in giving up on their marriages. Do we want these kinds of stories as our popular representation? Cause I don't. It looks like the world to me. No redemption, just plain pretend.
I feel like we're showing that it's ok to take advantage of God's grace.
Romans 6:1 - 23 (ESV) "1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our old self£ was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For one who has died has been set free£ from sin. 8Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. 15What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves,£ you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. 20When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. 22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Maybe she'll start selling the WWJD Daisy Dukes. That's right, short shorts with What Would Jesus Do written across the butt. It seems totally absurd, yet I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.
ReplyDeleteOooh my gosh, I can see this intense cinematic between Acuff and Osteen...straining and sweating and veins popping out as they pump that iron in slow motion...as a super holy chorus belts out 'Our Gooooooood...is an AWESOME God..."
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it'd be obvious that we were taking Jessica 'back'; I at least had no idea she was the unofficial Christian-approved pop star. Still, we shouldn't really ostracize her for her past and her failings. It'd be easy for the rest of the world to reject her, so we should show something better. She's a normal person, anyways, unflattering moments and all.
Hmm, interesting post and I was totally on board with all of it until you said the phrase "God's favorite team is the Patriots". That's just shear blasphemy Jon, to the highest degree! Go Colts. Now there's God's team. We've got Tony Duny, we win.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Jessica Simpson goes, if she does make her way back, I think she'll just be another one of those people that "does Christian music" because of everything that goes along with it... the perception of wholesomeness, the ability to tap into the Christian market, etc. I'd venture to say that half the groups that start out in Christian music just use it as a launching pad for bigger and better things. Not sure I can think of any that bombed out after making the launch to come back and attempt a re-launch (Brian Litrell maybe)?
God's favorite team is the Patriots? That's the closest thing I've heard you say to blasphemy yet! God doesn't like cheaters.
ReplyDeleteBTW - GO COLTS!
I love your blog, but have never commented before. And usually you're right on. But today, I just felt compelled to make one tiny little correction. I think God's favorite sports team is actually the Giants since only an act of God could have made "the catch" possible. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteI think that if she comes back, she should be given a clean slate, as we are all given a clean slate when we come to Jesus. I don't think we should judge her past.
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean I am going to buy her albums? Probably not. I am not that impressed by her talent.
Ah, Jon. How I've missed you and your biting snark. I was internet-free for a week, and the week after have been recovering. (Er, yeah, I was out of the country in a remote area, not just deciding to give up the 'net for a time. Ha! Aha! Willingly give up the internet... funny. Very funny.) I come back and read this fantastic post as my first one. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI actually hope Jessica Simpson does come back, as long as it's more than a marketing ploy. If she really wants to return to living for Jesus, I think we have no option but to take her back. That's not to say we have to buy her music even if we don't like it just to support her return, but since God has shown us grace, we have no choice but to show grace to others.
Also, her life may be clean compared to Britney or Lindsay, but I don't think most people would call her behavior stereotypically Christian. That certainly doesn't mean she isn't one, but there have been numerous bad choices made in very public forums.
All that said, however much I may argue with you here, I loved the post because it made me laugh, and anyone who has a lot of readers and dares to say he loves the Patriots (who I also love. And seriously, if God loves Jessica 2 to 1 because she's attractive, he must love Tom Brady 3 million to 1, because the boy is SO fine! LOL.) in front of them all is a winner in my book!
i am not reading through all the comments before i comment...here are my notes:
ReplyDelete1. Papa Joe WAS a youth minister...big emphasis on WAS...if you didn't already catch that.
2. Buster Soares was the owner/president of that Christian label Jessica WAS on. Anyone else hear him speak at a Christian conference? I believe I heard him speak at DC/LA '94.
3. Becks is NOT a scientologist (it doesn't deserve to be capitalized...take that cruise!). Not that the weirdos aren't trying.
p.s. i know too much random and pointless info...and i don't even read tabloids...but somehow it sadly soaks in.
Anonymous at 11:04, that is possibly the best marketing idea ever. Where can I buy a pair?
ReplyDeleteI, too, am more concerned about Heidi Montag.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.celebrity-gossip.net/celebrities/hollywood/heidi-montag-christian-musics-next-big-thing-204801/
This post made me LAUGH OUT LOUD! Too funny. Love it.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget Brian Littrell of the Backstreet Boys! He burst onto the Christian scene a couple years ago with "In Christ Alone" and "Welcome Home You," and he continually thanked God in his Backstreet Boys albums. I think he'd even get a high score on the worship leaders checklist.
ReplyDeleteInstead of taking Jessica Simpson back, let's just throw out all the Christian-rock-pop junk!
ReplyDelete"everyone knows that God's favorite team is the Patriots."
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy that I'm not the only person in the world who knows that!
I love your blog...it's guaranteed to make me smile everytime I read it!
Loving one another and holding each other accountable are not mutually exclusive, Thank God. Glad someone did it (and does it) for me. Hope someone does it for Jess. When we get to a point where we don't call sin sin in the name of "love" we're doing everyone a disservice.
ReplyDeleteI've had a long standing theory about God's favorite team...which is clearly the pats. I mean, hello, patriots? The original patriots of our nation being settlers looking for religious freedom? Divine indeed. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for making my day! (14 days to pre-season!)
Patriots as God's favorite team!??? Excuse me? Aren't they the ones who sold their souls to the Devil for a few Superbowl wins? I may quit this blog based on that statement.
ReplyDeleteEveryone knows the Cowboys are God's favorite team. They even left the hole in Texas Stadium so God can watch his team play. Next year they'll have a retractable roof they can pop open whenever they need a miracle. Works just as well.
I'm all for "taking back" anyone who makes an honest effort at living a Christian life. WE're all going to fall short and far be it from me to jusge where this girl's heart lies. If she wants "back in" (did she ever really leave?), then why not!
ReplyDeleteTwo things on Homer's third cousin once removed... yesterday I was shopping for new purse. I found one I really liked and it wasn't too expensive. It was on the short list. Until I saw it was a Jessic Simpson purse and I just couldn't bring myself to buy it. Her shoes are pretty cute too, but I feel like I'll need to buy a blonde ponytail extension in order to pull them off.
When she and Nick had that abominable MTV relaity show I remember seeing a clip (or maybe I read it? it's all a little fuzzy now...) that they'd gone to the White House for something and someone mentioned the Department of the Interior. She asked if they were the people who did all the decorating. I laughed so hard! In my mind she will forever be the girl who thinks the Deaprtment of the Interior picks drapes and carpet for the First Lady!
if jessica simpson does come onto christian radio, i'm going to have a hard time not viewing it as a "booty god booty" station, no matter how holy she sounds...and, country music? really? i just threw up in my mouth a little bit. ok, i'll admit, that was melodramatic.
ReplyDelete"I'm all for TBN doing a reality show with Britney and Jessica called Samaritan Woman (sung to the tune of American Woman). It can be like The Sinful Life .. uh, The Simple Life, but holy."
ReplyDeleteThat coul be the first tbn show I've ever watched.
Too funny.
i love how jon can talk about things that are touchy but you know hes kidding so its ok but talk about something like jessica simpson and all of the sudden everything jon says is no longer a joke. he must really think that god think jessica is hott...i cant believe that he thinks divorece is ok...scripture references on a post about jessica simpson just seems a little over the top.
ReplyDeleteim not trying to insult anyone i just think its funny.
"...but I am saying my daughters are going to a mountaintop convent when they get older."
ReplyDeleteOMgosh, I had to laugh at this one....are you actually related to my husband? He's convinced he'll start the new Calvary Chapel Nunery/Convent for our two girls....
"I think that sometimes the rest of the United States just assumes that everyone from Texas is a Christian."
ReplyDeletethat's because Texas is the promised land. at least that's what my Pastor used to say.
i'm not joking.
"I'm not saying I'm happy that we live in a world where we should congratulate people for remembering underwear..."
ReplyDeleteBusted out laughing at that one.
"There are just a ton of churches in Texas, which by the way is a state I do not mess with."
Smart Yankee.
Anna, I don't think Jon thinks divorce is ok (I hope). But I do agree with him that God thinks Jessica's hot.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: Is Contemporary Christian less forgiving than Gospel?
ReplyDeleteSupposedly R. Kelly is working on another gospel album. His first gospel album (which was part of a double album which included a not-so-gospel disc) went triple platinum - so technically, the gospel album sold 1.5 million. And The Preacher's Wife soundtrack - unofficially called Whitney Houston's gospel album - remains the best selling gospel album of all time.
Are there different philosophies in the genres? And if so, why?
Wow, this is sad! I liked your wrestling with God post but nearly just lost my readership.
ReplyDeleteDivorce is wrong, always. End of Story, that whole scandal of their TV show and break up was a disgrace to Christians everywhere because of your aforementioned reasons the World labeled her as one and because she called herself one.
She stopped calling herself a Christian a long time ago and stopped living like it, (I don't know where on earth you get the idea that she's been a "good girl").
So though we can forgive her follies and prayer for her to repent, until she has a change of lifestyle and AS WELL AS changes her tune, we can't really forgive her and et her back into the fold.
We as American Christians as individuals and as a culture are already lame and mediocre enough, please don't encourage your readers to continue conforming to the world.
All this sweat and bother about divorce. NOT that I condone splitting up over the finances or anything like that. Hello people, guess what?
ReplyDeleteSOME Christian men beat the pulp out of their wives and children. Some psychologically abuse them, and some even kill them.
THAT is why there is divorce. I would think that God HATES abuse a bit more than He hates divorce. Stop thumping and start LOOKING at some of the shy, scared women or maybe the perfect wives!!!
Stats are that 1 out of 4 women is abused, that means that some women at YOUR church are getting hit tonight.
Who really cares if Miss Simpson sings, but if she ever took a stand? I'd rather listen to a slutty woman discuss domestic violence, than listen to a preacher declare that it doesn't exist.
I agree with jennym....we need the Rock he can help with the leg dropping and we can probably find some use for the people's elbow....
ReplyDeleteplus, he's just cool :)
Wow, who knew Christians could be so harsh? If I was Jessica Simpson & read most of these comments, I definitely wouldn't want any part of the God these guys serve.
ReplyDeleteGood thing He sees her differently & hopefully at some point, someone will be able to genuinely relay that to her.
I love Jessica Simpson, and let me tell you why. She is a moderate singer (I actually like her new song), she has a terrible stage presence, she can't act, and the world thinks she is an idiot blonde. And yet, we continue to put her in the news, in our blogs, in our lives. Without putting out a sex tape, getting arrested, or flashing the camera, she has managed to stay in the public eye. And cash in. She is rich, without having a really amazing talent, she is rich.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love her for that.
Do you think she is really as "dumb" as she appears? Her longevity, and abilty to broker some pretty sweet business deals tells me no.
So I say "Rock on Jess". She may not be a role model for little girls, but she is a role model for anyone looking to see how to cash in on America's obsession with ridiculousness.
And if she "comes back" to Christian music, I say we roll out the red carpet. If the lyrics are true, and she sings them with truth, and she is worshipping God, then sweet goodness. And if she can't sing and the music is a bust.....well she can always have another "dumb blonde" moment and get right back on top.
Love her.
Well, as far as we know:
ReplyDelete*she seems to have put some effort into her only marriage, instead of having it annulled a few hours after the ceremony
*she hasn't shaved her head
*no hit-and-runs
*no baby dropping
*her sister was at least out of her teens before she got pregnant out of wedlock
*no videos of her smoking mysterious substances
she can be like that one relative everyone has. you know. we won't go around broadcasting our relationship but if anyone asks, we'll probably own up to it.
sadly being a youth minister doesnt' always count much (certainly not enough to "save" someone else). i've known three in my lifetime that had relationships with members of their "flock". and i don't mean they were just facebook buddies.
ReplyDelete3 Reasons why J. Simpson is the anti-christ's 2nd cousin by marriage.
ReplyDelete1) I'm pretty sure Tony Romo is that leopard beast from revelation and the "loaf" in the oven is the raised prophet who gets some authority. The mark of the devil put on people heads/hands would Definitely be the Cowboys Star.
2) Those boots were made for walking... a wide and downhill sloping road... not a strait and narrow one.
3) Isn't the Whore of Babylon addicted to pizza hut's cheese stuffed crust pizza? i thought so.
jon, this is fun! can you hold your next contest as "the best reason why Bon Jovi may just be the anti-Christ's brother?"
i thought i should clarify...the part where i said: "he must really think that god think jessica is hott...i cant believe that he thinks divorece is ok..." was all poking fun at people who "all of the sudden (think) everything jon says is no longer a joke" when he talks about something like jessica simpson being a christian.
ReplyDeleteJon, Pandora called for you. She says to stop messing with her box.
ReplyDeleteI didn't read all the posts so if someone said this already-sorry. Her dad is not a youth pastor, he WAS a pastor, now he's a pimp.
ReplyDeleteWow. Can we do a Stuff Christians Like: Making Divorce Unforgiveable (thereby assuring that Jesus' death was pointless since He couldn't forgive that?!? This amusing Jessica Simpson entry shed some light on things.
ReplyDelete(and yes, God hates divorce. But I'm pretty sure he also hates it when husbands abuse their wives and children.)
(and me? bitter? no.)
Excuse me while I follow up a rabbit trail for a moment. To those who said God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16), you are correct. To those who say that it is never permissible, I would urge you to take a second look at scripture.
ReplyDeleteMatthew 5:32
1 Corinthians 7:12-15
could we at least make Jessica audition first? cause then we'd be spared the continual pain of actually having to listen to her. and why are some of you commenting girls under the assumption that most divorces are the result of abuse? simply ridiculous. equally as ridiculous is the idea that God would give his support to a team led by Satan's head minion (aka -- Jerry Jones). and I'm a born-n-bred Texan, so I know. really.
ReplyDeletei think that Joe Simpson might be a perfect example of shrewd as a dove and innocent as snakes or in the world and of it.
ReplyDeleteEnough with the God's team is the Cowboys. God is a Steelers fan. Why? Read Tony Dungy's book.
Go Stillers!!
I don't think any of us who, like God, thinks divorce is wrong thinks abusing a wife and kids is acceptable. Abusing your wife and kids are as wrong as divorce. Nor do we think that divorce is unforgivable.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I don't think there's scripture that says if you're abused, you should divorce your husband. I think scripture supports escaping to safety and standing in the gap for your husband's salvation and changed life and reconciling. It can happen. It does happen. It's called salvation, Thank God.
I believe the testimony of a woman who says I had to leave my husband for the sake of my life and pray for him for 20 years until he submitted to Christ is far more effective than one that says, My husband was a bad man so I and my kids left him. We don't know where he is or how he's doing right now.
Actually I think if Jess read these post she would see that Christians overwhelmingly are more than happy to , like Christ, "take her back." She would also see Christians that aren't afraid to call sin sin and have no problem saying that watering down our faith is unacceptable. There's nothing wrong with that.
ReplyDeleteAnon 5:35 AM -
ReplyDeleteYou're starting a Bible war! LOL.
That Matthew verse doesn't say anything about encouraging divorce. In fact, it says that marrying a divorce woman is a sin.
And Paul clearly says "I, not the Lord" in that Corinthians verse.
God forgives those who divorce just like he forgives all other sins. But God's ideal is that marriage, like all covenants, is permanent.
Anon 9:03 AM, I'm fine with a Bible war. I'd rather someone show me I'm wrong based on scripture than based on their opinion.
ReplyDeleteI see your point about the Corinthians verse. I will think about that some more.
As for the verse in Matthew, I was trying to show that there was a valid exception for divorce (adultery).
And I wholeheartedly agree that God forgives and God's ideal is a permanent marriage. I just wanted to make the case against the blanket statement of "all divorce is wrong".
Jon, I'm disappointed with your passive stance on Texas. I can often be seen wearing this shirt. I thought you were cooler.
ReplyDelete"In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior." 1 Peter 3:1-2
ReplyDeletethis comes right after the often-memorized verses about christ's suffering, his example, and how we're supposed to follow in his footsteps (1 Peter 2:21-25)
i'm not saying that you're supposed to be a doormat. i'm not even saying that you're wrong if you leave your husband because he's a jerk and beats the crap out of you and your kids. do what you believe you need to do that will be most honoring to God. and if that means leaving an abusive relationship, then do it!
but maybe just think about those verses, read through them in context, and examine how christians are to live their lives.
Matthew 10:28, speaking about the costs of following jesus, tells us only to be afraid of the one who can destroy your soul and body in hell. its hard to figure out what is right, isn't it? not what is fair, easy, comfortable, or convenient. just what is right.
Well if you believe in the scripture that God hates divorce and that marriage is supposed to be permanent and that God's ideal is always right, how could divorce be anything but wrong?
ReplyDeleteFried pasta?!?
ReplyDeleteI think you just want Chicken of the Sea to be your corporate sponsor for ESPN2's Bench Press Showdown For God. There's better ways of getting sponsorship dollars without asking us Christians to take back a marginally talented, divorced, ex-reality show star hottee. Geez. What will we tell our kids in Big Church AND/OR Kids' Church? Think of the kids, Jon.
ReplyDeleteI have an idea. Why don't you ask a beer company to sponsor you?
excellent. and i will always and forever be confused about the man vs the restaurant.
ReplyDeleteOh, so many things to say after reading these comments!
ReplyDeleteMost importantly, travelin joe: PLEASE tell me you're kidding about Bon Jovi! I'm about to cry real tears over that one.
Next, the only real reason I don't care for Jessica Simpson is because I think she's a terrible singer. Just my opinion. Has nothing to do with her personal life.
And finally, as a child of divorce, I hate it too. But thank God that He allows a way out. My mother was not saved when she married my dad. She put up with nearly 10 years of adultery, abuse, and alcoholism. Divorcing him was the best thing she could have ever done for our family. She did the right thing.
I forgot something important in my last post, about divorce:
ReplyDeleteMy mom was basically shunned by a church when she was going through that nightmare. It was a time when she should have been shown love by her Christian brothers and sisters.
I am by no means encouraging divorce in all situations. But I wholeheartedly agree that sometimes it is the best option for all involved. I feel like my life was saved in a way (or at the very least changed for the better) by my mom's decision. And God loves her, accepts her, and forgives her.
Anon on 7/25 at 11:04:
ReplyDeleteGod's ideal is always right. God's ideal was Eden. But we don't still live there because humans aren't perfect. We can strive to be like God made us to be and to become more like His Son, but when someone breaks the covenant of marriage, the other party isn't bound.
To those who are politely suggesting not leave the wife/child abuser and "save the marriage", then back it with your interpretaion of a verse, I ask you this...were YOU beaten to a pulp and your kids tossed across a room? YES, even those marriages can be healed, but unless there is clear evidence of contrition, it is best not to let the children be guinea pigs while you hope things change.
ReplyDeleteYes, divorce is a bad thing, so is screwing up your kids and making them loathe God when you tried to forgive their abuser, over and over again.
I have a feeling that divorce isn't the issue here. It's church culture. And I bet those who refuse to break bread with a divorcee probably won't take tea with a gay man either.
Honestly, doesn't Christianity have enough boobs in it?
ReplyDelete...Ba dum bum...sorry, couldn't resist the obvious joke here.
The only problem I have with this post, is the humor isn't so extreme that it's obvious what is a joke or not. There is murky water around each statement where it leaves room for doubt of Jon's actual thoughts. I feel this post deserves a remix....
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have a question to commenters stating issues about abuse in relationships leading to divorce. Was Jessica being abused? If so I was not aware of this, and if this is true, why is her Ex currently the host of a show for young teens auditioning for the next HS Musical production? If it was public knowledge that he was abusive, I doubt he'd be in the spotlight around adolescents. So I am unsure if you all are implying that he has done this or not.
Yes, divorce is per situation. Yes there are exceptions where divorce is "permissible" but still, if there is SOME way to reconcile, if there is something more you could do to work things out, God makes it clear that He wants us to take those steps to save our marriages.
Mark 10:1 - 12 (ESV) "And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them. And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them £male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”"
In this particular passage, Jesus states that it is "permissable" but only because of the hardening of our hearts. We have sinned and turned cold to the truth. God does not want our divorce. I'm not saying you need to live with an abusive man or woman. This is foolish to put your life at risk. You can always remove yourself from those living quarters and seek help from counseling and church. But this does not mean you should shut the door and sign papers of divorce. You simply remove yourself from harm's way and give the option of reconciliation and change. You offer your forgiveness, but a relationship comes with repentance, just as our salvation does.
Either way, we are to love our brothers and sisters in Christ. If she wants to turn to Christ, AWESOME and more power to her. I know God has power enough to make that change in her life. None of us are perfect and should love her rightfully. But that doesn't mean we should not hold each other accountable and make known to our brothers and sisters what they are doing is against God's will.
1 Corinthians 5:9 - 13 (ESV) 9I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13God judges£ those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”
This states that we are to hold each other accountable. We are to discern right and wrong between our brothers and sisters. Though we should not expect the world to live differently as they are of the world. We are to love them regardless. And when those among us are caught in sin, it is our job to come along side and help encourage and love them back to God's truth.
Whichever Jessica is or was, I am not sure, I don't know her heart. The main point is we need to love her. (But I still won't buy her album. I'm not a fan of her voice is all.)
You'd think God's favorite team would be the Saints. O.o
ReplyDelete"There are just a ton of churches in Texas, which by the way is a state I do not mess with."
ReplyDeleteAs we say, you can't swing a dead cat with out hitting a church around here.
I saw a sign outside a small town that said something like pop. 1500, and 75 churches. I'm not kidding.
I actually (not even kidding here) felt so sad about her divorce. I really wanted it to work for them. Divorce is not one of my litmus tests. The only thing that bugs me about Amy Grant is that she says her current relationship is the one she was *meant* to be in. I hate that her first marriage is seen as nothing more than a mistake, I see marriage as more than that. So really it's more about the attitude about the divorce than a divorce. Divorce is just like all the other sins, as is homosexuality, adultery(which I am guilty of)and gossiping(another of my faves) . It's all crap, and it all has to be cleaned up.
I think it's funny that Texans are seen as Christians. We all ride horses and wear hats too. Right into the church.
contemporary christian music and country music come out of the same pre-fabricated Nashville music factory.
ReplyDeleteso...
ReplyDeleteI don't know what a Xian is. It sounds like a new race of human. Someone please enlighten me!
I love Tony Roma's!!! I want some now. yum.
I think maybe we are jumping too fast here. She has to put out some songs on the country music syndicate first before she can even cross over. And definitely her first song is not crossing over. It's called "come on over" and consists of leaving the dishes in your sink and the ice cubes in your dream. I'm not even kidding. You should look it up. It's a little silly.
Should 'we' take her back...who are 'we'?
ReplyDeleteWho is this collective body of 'we' that will choose to accept or reject Jessica? There should be none. She only owes God and certainly does not need to prove anything to us. Not that I agree with some of her choices, but those are between her and her Savior.
lauren dont feel bad cause it took me a while to figure it out too but xian i believe is meant to be a shortened version of christian...since it takes so much longer to type the extra letters...
ReplyDeleteDivorce aside, the problem I have with Jessica is a comment she made several years ago comparing Jesus' words to the words of Buddha. She found them both equally "inspiring."
ReplyDeleteMaybe I am being judgemental or maybe I am actually following the teachings of the Bible when it talks about putting the Son of God, who died for my sins on the same level as a false religious teacher. Jesus' words should be incomparible in our lives.
You have got to be the coolest writer ever. Thanks for making me laugh. I made a post about this post, for people to link over.

I really hope she doesn't make her way over here. I suspect she would be hurt by some of these mean spirited comments...from a "Christian" discussion. I understand the original post was satrical, but most of these comments aren't.
ReplyDeleteCan't emphasize the fact that she is HOTT enough.
ReplyDeleteWho knows, maybe she can be the Prodigal Jessica.
the ending of her "these boots are made for walking" where she scrubs down the car in her bikini. sure she worked out hard for a killer body to do that scene... but i can't shake that she would do that knowing whom she represents.
ReplyDeleteMINUS (and i'm from dallas).
"I'm not saying I'm happy that we live in a world where we should congratulate people for remembering underwear..."
ReplyDelete-best quote of the post.
Jessica Simpson is not country.
ReplyDeleteI know these things.
Ugh.
