I like John Mayer. I enjoy his music and think that his song "3 x 5s" is one of my favorite songs of all time. He's a good writer and his viral videos are solid, once inspiring my younger brother to remark, "I think I like John Mayer's comedy more than his music." But all that admiration aside, I think in some ways, John Mayer has snuck inside the Christian circle like a ninja. Or maybe we smuggled him in, I'm not sure. The point is, he's here, and Christians have embraced him in a surprising way. A few weeks ago, they performed "Say" at church. I know the guitar dude I wrote about yesterday is prone to singing "Your Body is a Wonderland" and I've heard people at church discuss the merits of his song "Clarity."Am I wrong about Mayer and Christianity? Maybe but I think that like most Christian arguments we should decide this in the form of a game. Below are 15 quotes. Some are from John Mayer songs. Some are from the Message version of the Bible. See if you can guess which is which:
1. Is this passage John Mayer or the Message Bible?
Then they get in all their shopping sprees. At day's end I'm ready for sound sleep,

6. Is this passage John Mayer or the Message Bible?

7. Is this passage John Mayer or the Message Bible?
I'm tired of all this—so tired. My bed has been floating … on the flood of my tears.
8. Is this passage John Mayer or the Message Bible?

9. Is this passage John Mayer or the Message Bible?

15. Is this passage John Mayer or the Message Bible?

How did you do? Did you score a perfect 15 for 15? Find the answers here and thanks to Kevin, for the Biblical references.
p.s. I changed the title of this post because my friend Jordan came up with it and I thought it was really funny. I love the ideas the readers send me. Honestly, you crack me up.
I seriously thought that was a trick and that they were all John Mayer song lyrics.....yeeesh!
ReplyDeleteIs it sad that I knew more of the John Mayer ones than I did the Message Bible? But what can I say, I do love John Mayer, and the Message doesn't usually sound "high and lofty" like we often times think Scripture should, so maybe it's a good thing that I couldn't necessarily tell them all apart?
ReplyDeleteOh Mandi- I did too.I thought "Jon's messing with us",but alas I apparently don't know my Jon Mayer OR my Bible!!!
ReplyDeleteMan... now I've got "Belief" stuck in my head!
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess I'll have to check out this John Mayer guy. I've been wanting some new good music lately. Thanks for the recommendation of sorts.
ReplyDeleteI thought they were all Jon Mayer. I could have swore you were trying to pull something. That's funny.
ReplyDelete#’s 2,3,5,6,8,9,10,13,15 all from the gospel according to John (Mayer). Sorry had to go there…
ReplyDeleteI got 11 out of 15. And I can't believe The Message Bible contains the phrase "shopping sprees." Would you mind dropping a chapter and verse so I could figure out what the heck is going on? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThat's hilarious. I only guessed a few were from the message and most of them were wrong. Just when I was thinking SCL had dried up you come out with this. Hilarious
ReplyDeleteI think this is more a commentary on the dripping cliches in the Messages than the acceptace of John Mayer. Personally? I don't like either very much.
ReplyDeletewow, number 15 is pretty bad. I would be embaressed to sing those lyrics, seriously
ReplyDeleteI had a friend who had a huge crush on JM a few years back. She wouldn't date non-christians so she got it in her head that he was "so close" to becoming a christian. It was funny/sad.
ReplyDeleteOk, I got 15 out of 15. the sad part is, I knew all the JM lyrics, and assumed the rest were from the bible! I guess that says something of how well I know my bible. The worst part is, I'm one of those worship leaders...
ReplyDeleteyeah, I'm kinda stunned by *anyone* singing "Your Body Is a Wonderland" in public. My husband and I both independently received that song when we were engaged from different friends - and we both heard it once and decided that listening to it again before marriage was a bad idea. It sat unplayed on both our hard drives for a year.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there were any other songs either of us treated like that.
I don't think John Mayer can be the secular Chris Tomlin....he doesn't highlight his hair or have that sexy facial scruff going on. Sorry. Maybe the secular Matt Redman?
ReplyDeleteJust missed 2 -- first I thought it was a trick, too! But then I went down a bit and suspected 7, 11, and 12 were the Message. Who knew. Nice game, Jon!
ReplyDeleteLOL I am gonna have to send this to one of my best girlfriends, she has a serious crush on John Mayer, I mean really bad. Even my kids know how much *aunt* Jessica LOVES John Mayer LOL
ReplyDeleteIts about freaking time that this issue was addressed! I'm certain that we have smuggled him into the church! I know that I've used "Love Song For No One" as the music for a video about dating at church. Or I've tried to get a friend (who can't stand JM) to see the truth behind the lyrics for "Belief".
ReplyDeleteExcellent post my friend!
If you didn't get it all right... that's okay since the message isn't really the bible... more like one man's understanding of it in very modern english...
ReplyDeleteah!!! I love john mayer, and I love this site, and now the two together??
ReplyDeletemiraculous.
and 3x5 is one of my favorites, as well.
ah, today is good.
I'm Christian and not a John Mayer fan. SO that's that. I don't know any John Mayer fans either. And I know a ton of Christians who love music.
ReplyDeleteAlso, that picture is freakishly scary looking of him. Seriously he looks evil and I think I want my mommy.
I too guessed all John Mayer. Anyway, I was curious myself, so for those of you who asked, here are the references for the passages in the Message:
ReplyDelete1. psalm 4:7
4. psalm 10:14
7. psalm 6:6
11. psalm 13:5
12. psalm 14:3; psalm 53:3
14. song of solomon 2:16
I had a younger christian friend convince me that John Mayer was worthy of listening too. "Your Body is a Wonderland" put Mayer on my 'forever mockable' list.
ReplyDeleteThis little comparison says lots more about the Message than it does about John Mayer!
I got 13 out of 15. I must say I am a proud John Mayer fan and a proud reader of the Message Bible. But whats with him dating Jessica Simpson? Not a big fan of Jessica. Jennifer I can go for.
ReplyDeleteI thought the same as Mandi! Would love to know the scripture references!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog, this is my first time posting.
ReplyDeleteWhen my husband and I lived in Texas we went to a church that played "Your body is a wonderland" as the opener for a message about sex.
A few months (maybe the next year) they played "Daughters".
On the quiz, I got about 3 from John Mayer and was really doubting some of that was from the Bible!
I was completely thrown by this, knowing John Mayer's only a bit and The Message hardly at all, although I did guess that #4, #11, and #14 were from the Bible. I too was thrown by "shopping sprees" in #1. I'm really curious as to where that is in The Message.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I know Christians like Chris Tomlin, but can someone explain why? I've been trying to figure this out for a long time. Chris Tomlin songs are terrible. Mediocre and terrible, and his voice is mediocre and terrible. But I know that saying so is blasphemy for some reason. Surely you have a Chris Tomlin entry. Please advise.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. So "the season that their grain and wine increased"(NKJV) becomes "shopping sprees." I'm not feeling it. Oh well! Thanks for the reference, Kevin.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should be asking ourselves is Jesus is our boyfriend or our Lord.
ReplyDeletehey, how about:
ReplyDeletefeel my chest when I look at you.
yeah, you've got my only heart.
my favorite Christian-Mayer lyric...
Great post! Although, I feel that there is no comparison between John Mayer and Chris Tomlin musically/technically. JM is WAY more talented as a writer and guitar player than CT could ever hope to be. I think JM might be one of the most talented guitar players ever!
ReplyDeleteYet another reason I only like the Message for reading...NOT for studying or interpreting.
ReplyDeletei've been reading your blog for awhile now, but finally decided to comment. Mainly because I'm a big fan of John mayer (or JM, to shorten it up). I actually had a hard time deciphering which of those were bible passages and which were his lyrics. well played, well played.
ReplyDeleteyes. name recognition has occured and so begins my walk to fame.
ReplyDeleteI am with Mandi...I was mortified that some of these were from the Message...I really like the Message!
ReplyDeleteUgh. The Message. Surely you've written a post on that one? Where is it?
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure John Mayer's next CD is entitled "Booty God Booty". I hope you get some royalties off that one!
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, they played "Say" a few weeks ago at our church. Does anyone do anything original anymore? Or are we just trading and recycling sermon topics and themes?
I love this post.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved the part of the song "Home Life" that says:
I can tell you this much
I will marry just once
And if it doesn't work out
Give her half of my stuff
It's fine with me
We said eternity
And I will go to my grave
With the life that I gave
Not just some melody line
On a radio wave
That "marry just once" line is one of the many things I like about that man!
met him recently... He needs to get out more, Christianity relevant or not. He was white as a sheet, and a bit of a zombie. He does have some good ones though.
ReplyDeleteI am a christian, guitar player and a HUGE John Mayer fan!! I have 3 of his signature guitars by martin and fender. I have been to many of his concerts. I am going to one on August 27th and I am sitting front row center. But here is my only problem with John Mayer even after meeting him and everything. His Profanity!!! the boys mouth can get bad at times. So sometimes I wonder if I should really support him as much as I do b/c of that.
ReplyDeletewow, it wasn't just my old worship team that loved him? We spent a ridiculous amount of rehearsal time on his stuff given we never played it in a service and often didn't properly know the stuff we were meant to be playing.
ReplyDeleteFor anyone that wants to hear the music we are talking about you can download one of his concerts at http://www.archive.org/details/jmayer2008-07-12.ca11.flac16
ReplyDeleteWho cares first of all. John Mayer is an extremely talented musician. I'm not surprised that a lot of Christian people like his music because a lot of people in general like his music.
ReplyDeleteI'm absolutely not surprised that they've started playing his songs in church. "Christian" music is KNOWN and infamous for being the flaming pile of crud of the music world. The lyrics (most of them at least) are cheesy and trite and the music is AWFUL and barely tolerable. It's not quality MUSIC at all. It's got a GREAT message, I'm not knocking the message...just everything else about it.
John Mayer is awesome and who cares if Christians listen to him. We're people too...we're allowed to have too taste in music.
Just because someone is very atuned to culture, society, and human intellect, doesn't necessarily mean they get their ideas from biblical inspiration. I love John Mayer is he's easily my favorite solo artist, but I don't think he's finding his way into Christian circles (nor do I belive he's been smuggled).
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I believe he's very methodical in his writing and he certainly says/sings things that relect or mirror some of Christ's teaching. I don't know, maybe I misunderstood your blog, but I doubt he's been hitting teh pews to find musical/lyrical inspiration.
i think his christian i really do!
ReplyDeleteI got 11 right, and of the four I got wrong, I only thought one was the Bible that was John Mayer. Very surprised. "Shopping sprees" is what got me on #1 though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting...this is really interesting. Though I think the Message is more like Weird Al than John Mayer. I've created a little quiz myself to prove this theory at
ReplyDeletehttp://heritageonline.org/2009/01/15/is-it-weird-al-or-the-message-bible/
so, is he Christian..?^_^
